We really appreciate what you created in Sanctuary Cruises. From the passengers' point of view it was always a great experience. That The boat was always clean and neat. Most of the time the deck hands were friendly. All of the times we were out we saw whales. Sometimes more than others. We have seen humpbacks, grays, orcas, hundreds of dolphins, sun fish, otters, birds of every description, seals, jelly fish, sharks, feeding frenzies, Delta & Dawn. Every trip was a new adventure.
My mom is 83. She had open heart surgery last August and one of the incentives for her to get up and moving was to go out whale watching. She was on a cruise to see the whales in 5 weeks. We thank you for that.
We will take the positives away from our encounters with Sanctuary Cruises.
-We loved our trips.
-We learned a lot.
-We love being on the ocean.
-There is always more to learn.
-We meet a lot of wonderful people.
-Our mom found a passion for the sea.
-And we found a new place we are interesting in visiting: The Trinity River

Heidi,
I am sad to see that the business is on hold for now… I've taken at least 5 cruises with you guys, some solo and subjecting every visiting friend and relative to the experience.
Best of luck in finding a buyer - you've become a summer activity staple!
Let me know. Best, Alison Elafros

What is the latest on the operation of Sanctuary Cruises? I’ve gone whale watching with you guys several times and always had a wonderful time. Do you think you will be running cruises this summer? let’s hope so!! Sincerely, Sheldon Nelson
As I read this I realized why I enjoyed going out with you all those times. You and Steph are just good people. You have pride in your work, and without that nothing else matters. It's always the first thing I look for when I'm hiring staff. I can teach the skills needed, but if you don't have pride, I'm not interested.
If you get back on the water, I want to be on the boat with you! I'll take vacation, or even time off without pay to ride with you folks again. And I don't know if I'll get any trips with the Monterey boats that will get me near Moss Landing to see if Big Fin is back with a calf this year. I tell her story a lot around here when I'm training volunteers.
Best to you both, Steve Johnston/Senior Interpretor Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Sanctuary Cruises newsletters had stopped and I had no idea what was going on. I feel so bad for you both; the way the buyer treated you. That’s awful, but your spirit comes through in spades again in this newsletter. It is very inspirational. You both have been through a lot over the years and yet to have a positive attitude, fix up Sanctuary and go back at it, even through a traumatic financial mess Congratulations and thank you for sharing it with the mailing list!
I have to admit, your for sale info got me thinking. My wife and I aren’t the right buyers for your business, but you are making a very generous offer to the buyer with the mentoring, participation, sharing relationships with the Monterey Bay local merchants/captains, etc. Bravo!
I’ll definitely be patronizing the business when it is up and running with the new buyer! Best regards, Ted Lohman/Mountain View, CA

Hello Capitan Heidi,
What a surprise! Even though I do not still live anywhere near Moss Landing or for that matter California, I always looked forward to the Sanctuary Cruises Newsletter and then all of a sudden, it stopped!
My little sister and I will never forget the cruise that we took our mother on Mother's Day 2003 or 2004 (I'd have to look at my pictures). I now live in East Texas and will probably never be back to California again. My screen saver on my laptop is a slideshow of pictures from the time I lived in Salinas and the majority of the pictures are of the cruise we took that Mother's Day.
Good luck on finding a new owner and may the good Lord watch over you and Steph, your adventure with the Trinity River Adventure Inn and the Sanctuary Cruises.
God Bless You, Hal Warren

Dear Heidi and Steph,
This is Lisa Borok (formerly at Seymour Center, now at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute).
I got your newsletter and have passed it around at MBARI (hey we're facing lay-offs, so who knows...) and to Patrick Wilkinson (who maintains a great email list of marine-related folks). So sorry to hear how the buyer drove things aground, but it's wonderful to know you are back in the mix and making things right.
I'll keep you all in my thoughts for the RIGHT buyer for the biz to come along! Someday I must get up to the Trinity River and say hey. Very Best, Lisa

Dear Heidi,
I can't tell you how happy I was to see you back in my Inbox. As I was reading your email I have to say I got a little misty. I didn't even realize how much I've missed reading about your cruises and your Adventure Inn. You're a wonderful writer. I really used to love getting your emails. I sincerely hope you're able to find a worthy new buyer, but I'm a little bit bummed that you and Steph won't be running the business again. Selfish of me, I know. :o)
I wish you both the best of luck in all your endeavors. Please keep me in your email list. I'd love to hear about all that is going on with both businesses. Sincerely,

Dear Heidi,
I have no idea how you do all you do with the time you have. I know a little about your life style because my husband was a fishing charter boat captain on the Gulf of Mexico for over 50 years. After we moved out here to live with our son's family we went out on the Sanctuary about 7 times over a period of 3 years. My husband died last Nov. 12 and so we had not been for a while, then just last spring I learned my sister from Pennsylvania was coming to visit and a group of 5 of us got together a party to go whale watching.
I happily went to the website to get the tickets and what a shock. No way to get tickets on Sanctuary Cruises. We were devastated and had to go on another boat from Monterey but did not have the kind of trip I always expected on Sanctuary. I loved all of you guys and the way you handled everything. I hope you find a buyer who will handle it all the way you did. Judging from this last trip, I have been ruined for any other boat. Good luck.

I was THRILLED to see the email from Sanctuary Cruises since we had such a wonderful time on our trip with Sanctuary Cruises. I had been looking forward to taking another trip with Sanctuary when I discovered they were basically out of business a few months ago. I was happy to see your email then sad to see the business is for sale again. I hope you find a buyer that will honor your vision of sharing the ocean's treasures with everyone. I know that my husband and I will happily make the journey from Sacramento to Monterey to experience the thrill of whale watching on Sanctuary Cruises. We were lucky enough to see Orcas during our cruise; a thrill that I will never forget. Thanks so much! Sincerely,
Shelley Boone

I just read the email sent to every one one the mailing list for Sanctuary Whale Watching.
I found Sanctuary a little over year ago and was so excited! A small boat that went whale watching. Large groups are not good for me, but I wanted to go whale watching so bad. I payed for mom and I to go and I was hooked. Through out the next year I was able to go a few more times and each time my mom and I had such a great time, and the captain seemed to go all out and the groups were always so pleasing.
I went to Kentucky for 6 months but I kept checking the Captain's Log on the web site to keep updated with what they were saying. I was disappointed when I read they were not going to have any more cruises, but since it said it was for haul-out and they hoped to be running soon, I was hopeful things would be back up by the time I returned home. Since I got home I have been checking the website regularly to see if they are selling tickets yet.
I saw the website notice of the business ordeal just yesterday, and then read the email I received today....what a sad story! I hope you find a good buyer soon!!! Because with only the few trips my mom and I went out on, your boat is the one I really like! I am itching to get back out and go whale watching on your boat again, so I hope things happen quickly for you guys. It is a shame that such a wonderful business was treated so badly but truly amazing you are so loyal to save it like this.
The best of wishes, and I hope that when the boat is able to go out again, I'll be able to meat the wonderful caretakers of the vessel on one of my next trips. I'll be waiting for Sanctuary to have cruises again! Kaelee Schoenneman

I don't know if you will actually get his email but thank you so much for the update! What is so weird is that yesterday I was thinking that it would be nice to go to Monterey and do a cruise- wow- miss you guys! We have been on, I think two of your cruises (sad it's not more) and hold such a high regard for what you do, or shall I shall I say did. It is sad to hear that your life's belief and caring was so disregarded. I got a couple of emails from the new owner but they soon stopped, I have to believe that there is someone out there who will take on Sanctuary Cruises and treat her right. Someone who will dedicate their life to the unknown animal life that resides in the Monterey Bay! Thank you both for all that you have done! Adios, Lynn

Great news. Well, not great about the hassle, but great for all of us fans that have been missing Sanctuary! We were all devastated! Quick question: Are you going to be running any trips while you are waiting for a buyer? We had to go out on a Monterey boat to see our whales. NOT the same. Let me know if you are planning any trips and I'll let all my gang at the crystal store know!
Thank you so much for creating, and now saving Sanctuary, one of the sweetest treasures of Monterey Bay! We LOVE YOU GUYS! Laura/Earthly Treasures

If only I lived in California, I would be seriously interested in the business, your ideal buyer description is ME ME ME.
We are over in the fall and plan a trip whale watching as usual, are you planning to operate the vessel until a buyer is found ? Please pass on regards to Steph and the best of luck with the business. Regards, Eddie J. Hall

Best of luck in finding a suitable buyer this time around. I wish I was it , but I haven’t the faintest idea how to drive a boat, and everything I know about whales I learned from Sanctuary Cruises.
Anyway, please keep me on whatever email lists you have; I always enjoy hearing from you.

Dear Captains and Crew,
You do not know me, nor would you remember me. I lived in Monterey for one year 04-05. Turns out I am not a California girl and moved back to Ohio where I truly belong. One of my favorite memories is going out on your cruise and seeing dolphins so thick I could have walked on water.
I spoke about you guys often, and recommended your tours to others I found were heading out your way. It was an experience of a lifetime for me which I am very grateful. Your knowledge and professionalism was what impressed me the most, also those handy little pulse bracelets (ReliefBands) as I hold the world's record for chumming queen. Those things DO work!
Anyway, I just wanted to say how sorry I am that this numbskull put you guys through so much when you have brought so much joy to others. I am glad things are going better and wish you the best of luck. I will tell you that I wish I had the money, the know how, and the talent. What an incredible opportunity to have a business that brings you so close to the beauty and diversity of life. Who could ever call that work? Sincerely, Amy LaMontagne

As I read your email, at first I thought you were going to take back the business and run it yourselves. But alas that is not so. Is it really impossible for you to continue to own Sanctuary Cruises and just have more help running it? Your wonderful spirits are so much a part of it and so much a part of it's appeal. My husband and I had a great time on our honeymoon almost 3 years ago and if we're up that way again I most definitely want to go back out again with your outfit since you guys are back at the helm of the business. I look forward to the newsletters again and reading about the different marine mammals, otters, etc. that you guys spot off of your coast.
I also hope you're able to get the people back that worked for you previously. They were very knowledgeable especially when someone got a little green around the gills on our trip to help this person with her seasickness, not to mention very friendly staff, too. I really enjoyed our captain for that day.
I'm super picky when it comes to whale watching trips, especially since I'm quite knowledgeable about marine mammals myself. Again it's great to have you guys back as owners of Sanctuary Cruises! I'm sure your customers will start coming back now that you're in charge again. Jeannette Ashlin

We haven't been to Monterey since you left, so I lost track of what was happening with Sanctuary. Moss Landing must have been in shock to see such a life-giving project fall apart. We recently created a Living Trust and I have listed Sanctuary as my choice for a wonderful Irish Wake. So you can see I was a little shaken when I think of what a nightmare that could have been! My dream wish would be for Steph and Heidi not to sell so that I know it would be one "killer" party (sorry, had to do that). Geez, the loss of Sanctuary Cruises has not been good for town nor the Captain's Inn. I am hoping a new owner runs out of Moss Landing; I sure do get pounds of calls about "what happened to Sanctuary," so glad there is good news to share about resale and for the future. The buyer had a sweet deal; all he had to do was answer the phone himself.
Anyway, you can assure your buyer if they are in Moss Landing we will sure do our share to get passengers.

Hi Heidi,
Thank you for letting all your fans know what happened to Sanctuary Cruises; what a shame to have had that happen. We had gone on a couple of trips with you and Steph and were on the trip the weekend after Mother's Day when a second orca attack happened. I was going to come for the taping that Tigress Productions was doing on the orca attacks. Unfortunately, we had just moved to Bakersfield. I had to change my plans because that happened to be the only time that several friends with trailers could help us move into our house. I was very disappointed, but was delighted to see the program on National Geographic. I think that it showed you as the dedicated and concerned naturalist that we saw on that trip. Congratulations.
I've been checking the SC website; because, I was hoping to go out on Sanctuary
last week, on the 10th. We took a trip last year on that date. After you left, we lost our grandaughter, Amanda, in an auto accident on June 10, 2007, exactly 6 months before her 16th birthday. We took family and friends out to scatter Amanda's ashes in the bay the following October. (Monterey and the Aquarium were her favorite places to go when she came to visit us.)
I wish you all the luck finding a new owner for the business that you cared for for such a long time. I hope that you Sincerely, Dee Thatcher

Hi Heidi,
Was so excited to see the heading of your email, and then I read it. So sorry that the guy ended up being a nutcase. I took kids out in August of '07 and everything ran smoothly; guess that didn't last long.
I wish you could run both places, but since you can't, I now hope you get new owners up and going for the summer season! Yikes, that's almost here.
Your Trinity place sounds wonderful, and we must not be on your email list, so please add us, I'd love to come someday. Thanks again for the update and imagery of the river

Thanks for the note. Since I did 6 yrs in the USN, I have many water-oriented friends; I will share this. One of my good friends lives in Washington State and finds jobs and stuff for those getting out of the USN and that includes officers and qualified people that want a relaxing second career. I will have her give out your info to those interested. I know one guy that just wants to “Own my own boat and take people out fishing” well, this would be darn close! He’s not 50 yet and was a boatswains’ mate before his desk job. He knows boats! Good luck! Mona/AZ

Dear Steph and Heidi,
Wow it is so very wonderful to hear from you again!!!!! My husband and I are so excited. We were with you only for one trip, but it was the trip of a lifetime! We still recall it fondly after all of these years. Also, you told us how nice it was to see how in love the two of us were, and we still are.
Thank you so much for the gift of that wonderful day at sea. Thank you for making a difference. We don't have much to contribute monetarily but let us know if you are having any fund raisers to help out. Also, my husband is now an English professor, so if you ever need any help writing grants or something along those lines, we would do what we could to help. I would love for my daughter to take a cruise with us one day. Be well and know our thoughts and prayers are always with you. Donna & Keith

What a cool follow up. I too was excited to see your message, and disappointed that the buyer did not keep Sanctuary up to its fantastic reputation. I was in Monterey back in February doing some job networking, and was sad when I called about a trip to hear a message saying it was "closed for the winter." My three trips out on your boats all bring happy memories. Thanks, Wendy

Great Work on Sanctuary,
Michele and I, many friends and family, have been out with You many times, and had so much fun on that boat. Many great days, to date, three close encounters !!! Spectacular !!! Once in a lifetime experiences. We enjoy being out there, and our only option at present is with those guys from Monterey. I must say: It's not the same. Hopefully Sanctuary Cruises will live again soon.. we will come back in a flash. You have been sadly misssed. Regards,
Tony & Michele

Heidi and Steph,
It has been so wonderful to hear from you. I'm so sorry to hear what happened with your beautiful boat and business. I too was hoping that you were taking back the business and going back out on the Bay. I can't tell you what a difference your trips made in my life.
My family and I have become so much more aware of our environment - especially our oceans. I have become so intrigued with whales and I hope to be able to get more involved in efforts to educate people and help save them. This year I read the "Eye of the Whale" and I found out how much you have tried to help the whales - thank you. You two are amazing people and I feel honored to have been on several of your cruises.
I was blessed with a trip down to San Ignacio Lagoon back in March of this year. To be able to be among the Gray Whales in their lagoon is absolutely incredible. I have looked into the eyes of these amazing, gentle giants. I have touched them and fell deeply in love with them. It was an experience that I will never forget.
Thank you for helping me and my family to learn about our oceans and the whales (our ambassadors of the sea). I hope and pray that the person who purchases the Sanctuary can continue the legend that you two have created. God bless you both.

Thanks for sending me the newsletter. It was great to see Sanctuary looking like herself again. I'm at a loss to understand the buyer's failure to launch. How many opportunities do we get to squander in a lifetime? I'm truly sorry you had to go through this nightmare. I hope some worthy person will step up and give Sanctuary the time and attention she deserves. She's a great little boat, and I will always love her.

Great to hear all the progress with the Sanctuary. She does look beautiful. If you decide to take any cruises on her, please let me know. We are really missing our sanity time. We were in Santa Cruz over the weekend for a soccer tournament. We could see the bay from the fields and all of us just wanted to be out there again.
Love the updates. Keep them coming. Sharan Kemp

Dear Heidi,
Oh my word! I somehow missed reading your June 11th email, so want to thank you for the June 22nd one! Upon reading responses you included, I promptly realized something big has indeed happened to my favorite whale watching team, and searched for the earlier email.
So, now I've read through both (thank you), and I am so sorry to hear your news. I am dumbfounded that not only had you sold the business, but especially that you both suffered as a result, and that Sanctuary was so mistreated and dormant for so long. What a waste, on so many levels.
But, glad to hear you and Steph and others could come to the rescue. Bittersweet. I look forward to stepping aboard for more (long overdue!) whale watching trips in the future! My last one was for a very memorable birthday celebration; I usually don't have birthday parties, but thought I'd use it as an excuse to get a group of friends the opportunity to experience one of my passions - the ocean and its wildlife and amazing whales, and with my favorite captains.
All my friends had a wonderful time, and I had planned on doing such a trip for my birthday every year (March).
But alas, the following year while out riding my bike on errands I was struck by a car; bicycle totalled and my body nearly so. It's been a very long recovery the past number of years, and though the extent of injuries resulted in the loss of my business, and a couple remaining limitations that prevent me from returning to some other things I loved doing, I was at long last ready (physically) to use that certificate this coming season, even if it was to be just my young grandson (who has yet to go on a whale watching trip) and I.
Ya know, I had checked your website several times in the past couple years and thought something was up; so unlike you to not have current/recent info and pics! I think I even sent an email, but never heard anything back. I'm glad I updated my email address last year so I can get your current news! How exciting that you have another business connected with the water and people - a natural match for you and Steph. Will have to check that out too! I really wish you both, and Sanctuary, continued success and many, many blessings.
Much love, Anita (aka: Oceanita) Santa Cruz, CA

Dear Heidi,
It was such a nice surprise to get an email from you again and to hear that you took Sanctuary Cruises back to the right path. I have fond memories going out to sea with you, spotting humpbacks and killer whales and I was so surprised that after you sold the business we basically never heard from the guy again (with exception for his introductory newsletter).
I went to Moss Landing a couple times over the last year but never saw any action around the boat so I thought something must be wrong. Even though I would love to see you keep the business, I can understand that that's not the plan so I cross my fingers that you find a good owner soon! Cheers and all the best to you, Katja

Hey, you 2! So glad to hear you are doing so well. I've really missed Sanctuary and did not schedule any more trips after I stopped receiving the emails. I hope the new owners work out.
I am hoping to schedule a long weekend up at Trinity sometime this fall. Would love a kayak lesson and a motorcycle ride! In the meantime, take care and thanks for keeping in touch with all of us. Alison Gude

It must be heart-breaking to see something you worked so hard to create fall on hard times. As a result, I will completely understand if you do not have the time or inclination to answer the following question. Are there any other operators in coastal California who you feel share your passion for marine life, environmental education and customer service? In other words - since the best is temporarily out of business do you have a suggestion for second best until you find the right buyer? I hope your search for the right buyer is successful. Emails from before we sold also tell the story of our company:
5/8/2007: Thank you so much for a great trip out on Saturday! Having 3 friendly whales near the boat was incredible!! We understand that this doesn’t always happen so I feel very lucky to have gone out on Cinco de Mayo!! A splendid way to spend a portion of the day…followed by chowder at Phil’s. Thanks so much!
Mary Lascelles~Redding, CA
4/30/2007: Hi -Just wanted to say THANK YOU for a great trip on Tuesday 4/24. We saw humpback whales, and found ourselves in a large school of porpoises. Of course sea lions and otters were everywhere as well.
We had my mother there for her 85th Birthday - and you guys made her feel really special by announcing it on the boat - and saying that her good karma brought all the fish [well, marine mammals] out!! Thanks also for helping her get in and out of the boat.
Thanks again. We have done other cruises in the Monterey area - but
will now only use yours - and will only recommend you to others.
Eric Nelson/Fort Lauderdale, FL
3/28/2007: Dear Heidi- I called and booked the trip today for next Thursday. I wanted to thank you for all your help with the emails, it really helps when people are prompt to reply to questions. You made my decision to go with your company very easy. Thanks again and see you next Thursday! Jennifer Timmerman
3/24/2007: Dear Heidi,
A couple of years ago my partner and I visited Monterey . We are avid whale watchers on the east coast and were excited to finally go whale watching out west! We went on a couple of whale watch cruises in Monterey Bay, and were really disappointed. The boats were crowded and we seemed to know more than the naturalists on board!
On the advice of a friend, we drove up to Moss Landing to take a Sanctuary Cruises cruise. What a difference! [The crew] were so friendly and welcoming, and we had a great time. The next time we are back on the west coast, you can bet that we will skip the Monterey boats and go straight to Sanctuary!
Anyway, the real reason I am writing is to tell you how happy we are that Sanctuary was featured in the National Geographic special. We watched last week--sometimes covering our eyes--but very interested in what we learned. Mostly though, I'm glad that such a great company got profiled in such a big way.
Congrats to you and your whole team!!
Jennifer Koretsky~New York
3/23/2007: Heidi, I am sure you got lots of email feedback on your documentary, so I hesitated to write. But then I got your newsletter soooo... We don't have satelite TV at home. So my husband, myself and my 16 year old son took a much needed weekend jaunt to the northern Georgia mountains and rented a cabin with satellite TV so we could watch the show. It was great!!! and as a bonus we had two days and one night of rare bonding with our teen boy hiking the beautiful trails in the area!!!
Also, got him more excited about our own trip scheduled with you for May 30th. I am afraid once he gets there you may just have to take him on as an additional deck hand. Senior year of high school be darned. Anyway, the show was really great, you looked really great and we cant wait to come on our adventure with your crew in May.

3/18/2007: Hi Guys, What an excellent job Tigress and Ben Gooder did at producing the [National Geographic documentary "Whale Attack"]. We had a wonderful time watching it. We were so proud of how Angela did and have received calls from Chicago and New York from people that recognized her. It is amazing how many family members, friends and neighbors who saw her and have already called to tell us. Keep us posted and hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Rick Garcia
11/26/2006: We had an amazing trip - so many humpbacks coming quite
close, lots of flukes, a mola mola[giant ocean sunfish], plus great weather and the great crew of Noel and Hillary made it a perfect day. Diane Gunvalson
11/26/2006: What a splendid trip Noel and Hillary took us all on. There was lots to see and lots to photograph. I actually lost track of how many flukes I captured. Credit goes, with great thanks, to Noel's loudspeaker coaching on when the whales might be on the way up to the surface. But the one I am most proud of is the one I'm sending along here. A beautiful thing, with markings that must be unusual. And then there was this fish.... Okay, enough. My enthusiasm runs away with me. This is just a thank you note for running these special cruises. Best regards. Alice Steele
10/16/2006: Wonderful clean boat, great employees and very cooperative whales. THANKS so much!!! Just a quick note to thank you and tell you how much we enjoyed our cruise on Saturday, October 14th. We have been on cruises with other companies and enjoyed them. Living in Kansas City now, had to choose and reserve by internet. We thought we would give you a try. The captain, Noel, and Lauren, were as excited as the passengers on board; full of information and had eagle eyes that were able to spot and track many things. My favorite was a small humpback who ended up breaching several times. TOTALLY awesome! I have attached 2 pics one of the each of the whales. I must admit I was too excited to even try and take pictures of the whales breaching. Oh, and my usually motion-sick husband tried one of your [Relief Bands]. He had NO problems at all, which he usually would have, even though it was a fairly calm sea.
THANKS again, and we will be back! Nicolle and Brian Christensen
10/7/2006: Heidi, We have been back about a week now from our holiday. I booked the whale watching quite a while ago now. We actually had our experience with you on Sunday 17 September and were so lucky to see a female humpback who stayed close to the boat for quite a while. It was an experience of a lifetime and it's something we'll never forget. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful morning. It was better than we imagined and [Captain] Noel was very informative and gave us a great day. We were also lucky to see a bottle-nosed dolphin as we went out of the harbour and sea otters. If we are ever in that part of the states again, we would definitely book it up again and would recommend you to friends.
Thanks again, Karen Howlett
10/4/2006: What else can I say? You did it again. Within a mile we found one of your favorite humpbacks, "Big Fin". If everyone on that boat didn't get some great fluke shots plus a couple of lunges, they probably need to hand over their camera to someone else. We encountered lots of Risso's [dolphins] and a couple of ocean sunfish; otters; anchovies popping out of the water; and played with the northern right whale dolphins. As we came back into the dock we had an incredible encore performance from Big Fin. She is such a beautiful part of our universe and deserves to be protected by all of us.
Thanks again, Steph, Heidi, Noel and all the wonderful volunteers you have by your side. Pat Kelley
10/4/2006: Just returned from a trip to USA [including Hawaii & Monterey Bay] & was pleased to report a fantastic experience on one of your whale watching trips on 17th September where I was able to get some great shots of a female humpback. Many thanks for a great experience & I wish you all the best.
Regards, Rob Vigar/UK

It works." Peter Bennett
9/11/2006: Hey you two: Had been way too long and thanks to Steph for the great trip on
Saturday. It was really nice to get back out on the water, especially aboard Sanctuary; just love that boat. Great day, fluke and back shots galore, attached are two of the best . There was a guy out with us with a D200 and a 400mm, but I have found on those trips that 200mm is about max you want cause you guys get us so close. I was down at 70mm for the back and flukes shot and that cut the third whale out of the frame. Double Flukes is a pretty nice shot which I was able to back off to get centered and then zoom in and time easily given Steph's piloting skills; they were dead ahead and the boat was steady steady, and even with my [crappy] lens, it came out well. Will try to get out once more before the grays. Best to both of you, David Tillotson
9/5/2006: Hi Steph, I wanted to share this photo with you from my trip today with Noel. I have never see Risso's before and am very happy I got the opportunity to. Had a wonderful time, I always do, that why I keep coming back to Sanctuary Cruises time and time again. You guys make us feel like family. We'll see you next time.
Thank you once again, Michelle Martin
8/27/2006: Thanks for your environmentally conscious whale watching trip and for your team, which made the experience a very pleasant one. Regards, Nora Berger and Oscar Chao
8/20/2006: Hi, my daughter and I have just got back from Monterey today and miss it already. We saw Lefty and another humpback whale. It was great, so informative. This was our 4th trip out with Sanctuary Cruises and it definitely won't be the last.
Thanks so much, Jeane and Jennifer Stokes
Montana whale watchers/Lots of cows no whales
PS: Could we trade a few of the cows for a couple of whales?
7/20/2006: Heidi, I have to tell you how thrilled I was to be on board the boat yesterday on my last day off from work. There were humpbacks seemingly everywhere, including two moms with calves, and the headline act was a slightly crazed young male humpback who just couldn't seem to stop doing back flips, belly flops, rolls, headstands, and even a sea otter impression by rolling around on his back and waving fins and fluke at us. We were close enough this whole time to hear him not only blowing out, but breathing in huge gulps of air in preparation for his stunts. The anticipation was almost as good as the show, watching him dive, then he came leaping out again. Fantastic. Best of all, thanks to the length of your trips, the other whale-watching boats had already left, leaving us out by ourselves to enjoy the performance. I really don't think that the whale would have felt relaxed enough to do all that jumping around with a lot of boats around, though I do think that he could hear our cheers and was playing to the crowd!
Thanks again, and I will definitely be back! Sujatha Ramakrishnan/San Jose, CA
6/15/2006: Dear Sanctuary Cruises,
Our family loved visiting with the amazing marine mammals and birds of the Monterey Bay and Pacific Ocean on July 12, 2006. Thank you for this opportunity. The crew were both instrumental in enhancing the educational experience of the excursion, especially for our kids.
We would have been happy with seeing a couple of humpback whales, but thanks to luck and the experience of your crew, we observed 2 blue whales, 10 humpback whales and over 500 dolphins, including Risso's, Pacific white-sided, and Northern right whale dolphins.
Of course we enjoyed watching the sea lions, harbor seals, and sea otters, and it was an additional treat to see the numerous pelagic species of birds...the experience became even more magical for my children when the captain invited each of them to take control of the steering wheel for short time!
Before selecting a whale watching company, we checked each web site and phoned and spoke with staff before making our final selection. We were looking to support a company with good environmental ethics, on-board naturalists, and a good track record of successful whale sightings. We are truly glad that we chose Sanctuary Cruises and Moss Landing.
Bonnie Clarfield-Bylin
7/15/2006: Hi Steph & Heidi,
My friend, Ellen Perry, and I had the great thrill and adventure of being on the Sanctuary July 9. I was thrilled beyond belief...just being on a boat on the water in the ocean -- I was IN MY ELEMENT! That's all I needed to be happy and was, deliriously so. Didn't care if the sun didn't shine, the fog didn't lift, didn't see more than one whale -- it was FANTASTIC and I can't wait to do it again and again and again! Sat on the bow after we saw the whale and got soaked and after drying off just a bit, went back out for more -- I still think the captain did it on purpose, or is it porpoise ;~) and no, I don't really think he did. My ONLY disappointment was not being able to hang on and take pictures, too -- just missed getting a bow seat when we had the whale nearby, or I would have.

6/23/2006: Hello Heidi,
Can't remember for sure how many times we've been out; several over the past 3 years, but we saw more Risso's [dolphins] and humpbacks than we've ever seen, last Friday the 16th. The weather was crystal clear and the seas were pretty easy.
As you can imagine, the crew again did a PERFECT job conducting the tour, they are the best you could have when you and Steph are not there. We have been with them a time or two before, and they are dependable and good for your business. Shows your good management ability in having such great "lieutenants" in charge, so that you can work on other things as needed.
Thanks for the frequent newsletters. Can't wait till we're there again (Georgia's a long way from Moss Landing, sadly)...again, thanks to your crew. It's the second straight time we've been out with them and they are very caring, careful, and a great asset to you. Your equipment is great, but people always make the difference.
Bless you, The Pearces
PS: Thanks for the "Whales are for lookin' " t-shirt for my daughter. Mom and I had to have one too after we saw hers.
6/14/06: "Thank you so much! I was on the cruise yesterday. Well, you sure didn't exaggerate the experience! (I'm the escapee from the seminar in Santa Cruz!) I'm sure your captain has already described, in detail, the GIANT mixed pod of dolphins and humpbacks that we were blessed with yesterday.
OH MY HEAVEN! I have never even imagined being amongst that many cetaceans at one time. I cannot thank Sanctuary Cruises. My only regret is that I didn't have my good camera with me, since this was a spontaneous trip. [I took] photos with one of the little snappy-zoom cameras from your boat. Not bad shots considering.
I would like to add a link to your website on my store's site. (Your website is wonderful!). Now I have a local place that I can whole-heartedly recommend for making cetacean contact. Every customer that has come in today has your phone # and website, mostly because I can't stop showing everyone the photos. As soon as they see them, they ask for your #. I enthusiastically await the stories they come back with.
I should have come down to find you folks sooner. Trust me, I will be back!

6/12/2006: "I just have to tell you how much we enjoyed our trip on the
Bay. We've been on a number of whale watching trips over the years, here and in Mexico and Alaska. But I think yesterday's was the best ever!
We saw an unknown number of humpbacks, some very close to us, and some in the distance. We saw many flukes, and I got some on film. And the Pacific white-sided dolphins frolicking in our wake were spectacular!
The crew was great. They found a couple of pairs of humpbacks, one quite large, and maybe another 5-6 farther away, but still close enough to see lovely fluke shots.
The weather was about as perfect as possible. The only times I got even
slightly cold was sitting up front when we were traveling fast. The
water was like a lake! So calm and beautiful. And, though I didn't have
any such expectations and was willing to enjoy whatever the day
provided, this was what we did for my birthday, and it couldn't have
been better (unless, of course, you were on hand).
There were so many possible shots of the tails that I just put the camera away, deciding I had enough, and ju
st enjoyed watching them."

6/1/2006: I just wanted to compliment your crew on the wonderful experience we enjoyed last week. I was accompanied by my mother, for whom your whale-watching cruise was the primary reason for our trip to Northern California. And, despite four days in San Francisco, two more in the Monterey Bay area, and one in Yosemite, I think she'd agree with me that the day we spent out on the water with Sanctuary Cruises was the highlight of our trip.
I know that a part of this was the sheer luck of finding several whales in a mood to entertain. We were also fortunate enough to get some great views of two different types of dolphin, as well as numerous other species of marine wildlife. And, we were blessed with terrific weather. So, I suppose it would have been an enjoyable day had we not seen so much as a gold fish.
The crew saw to it that we were comfortable, entertained, and well-informed throughout the duration of our trip. Their genuine thoughtfulness was really appreciated, and their enthusiasm for their work was unmistakable.
Please extend my thanks to the two of them for helping to make it such a memorable day. Keep up the good work; I sincerely hope to be a repeat customer!

5/2006: "I worked for a whale watch/harbor cruise company in San Pedro for years and I had NEVER seen a show like I did yesterday. The whales were breaching, spy hopping, tail lobbing and putting on quite the show. We also saw tons of dolphins and many other marine and sea life. The [crew] was enthusiastic and polite. Thank you for a great trip and memorable experience!"

4/17/2006: Steph & Heidi,
Once we stepped aboard, I told my wife that I had a very good feeling about the day ahead and to place herself in your safe hands for sea-sickness control. [She rented a Relief Band.] She had no problems on the day, thanks to you.
We loved the trip so much that we will return next spring (with friends) to spend another day or two out on your boat. Unfortunately, we have to return to the UK on Tuesday & although we have packed many things & places into our holiday (whoops vacation), your trip is at the top of our list of things we have done on 5 visits to California.
We are in Oakland for David Gilmour's (Lead singer with Pink Floyd) concert tomorrow night before flying back to blighty. His new album (On an Island) will forever be in our memories & we feel is linked to your whale watching trip (musically & thought provoking).
One last request. Where can I purchase one of your NASA bands for my wife. Reason: I have a fishing boat myself in the UK and she has never been on it because of seasickness. You have changed her life.
See you next year & don't change your recipe. It works. Peter Bennett
About 4/8/2006: "Thank you guys so much for the wonderful experience. It was such a beautiful day and the sights were wonderful. I was truly amazed and can't wait to do it again. I loved to see all the Girl Scout faces with all the excitement of the sightings. I love what you do for the kids. Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge. My daughter loved it so much that she gave you the scarf she made herself. It was the first one she ever made. You made a place in her heart forever. Thanks, Deann Suf"
3/11/2006: "Wanted to send a note to tell you we had a great cruise. My daughter who is 5 loved the trip. She tells everyone who will listen that she drove the boat and all that she learned. It was more than I thought a five year old could remember."
Sandy Ahlgrim
3/9/2006: Dear Heidi & Steph, THANK YOU!!! for three of the most memorable days of my life. The bow-riding dolphins put Olympic ice-skaters to shame: ("You little primates think you're so cool with your opposable thumbs; betcha can't do this!"). Everything about your cruises expresses your commitment to excellence and the animals. It's clear to me that the whales know this. With great respect, Holly Tannen"
2/26/2006: "Hi Heidi, Thank you for an incredible experience (millions of dolphins and our own personal humpback) on Saturday. We loved every minute of it and appreciated you and your crew. We will recommend you to any who will listen." Dick and Sherry McDermott
2/19/2006: "I was on the trip on Saturday past (I came all the way from Ireland). It was spectaular! A gray whale came right up to the boat and I could see it so clearly! It was the trip of a lifetime. We saw humpbacks and loads of dolphins as you mentioned. I really really want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys do the best whale trips ever! THANK YOU! I will visit you again for definite. " Toni Patton
2/10/2006: "As busy as we all are, it's always worth taking the time to read your newsletters and view the pictures. It takes me away from it all for awhile and gives me a sense of calm. It's a welcome break! Keep it comin'!" Karen Ramm11/17/05: "My husband and I recently went on a cruise on the Sanctuary with Noel and it was absolutely fabulous! We are semi-pro photographers and got some fun shots of both the orcas and the humpbacks that we were treated to!
It was the first time that either of us had seen orcas in the wild and it was a spiritual experience for us! You can view the photos online at:
http://www.pbase.com/picsbytammy/moss_landing
I can guarantee you that we will be back REAL soon so that we can capture some more photos! Thank you for offering such a nice cruise!"
Tammy and Michael Mallett
10/12/2005: "As a subscriber, I wanted you to know I ALWAYS open your newsletters. Why? Because I receive so many headlines that bring me down, I don't open them and I know that your newsletter and photos will bring me up! I've been on two cruises, have recommended you and will surely see you again. Keep up the good work." Barbara Emery
10/19/2005: The Definition of Magic
Jon Cronk was out with us a few weeks ago. It was his first time with Sanctuary Cruises and he was treated to three friendly humpback whales. He got so many great photos, he brought us a CD of them when he joined us last Sunday.
On that day, we had MORE friendly experiences! Jon was busy taking pictures while another passenger, Bobbi Dunham, absorbed the experience. Here is her letter, accompanied by Teri Garcia's photograph of the eye of the whale:

If I could have handed someone a wish list of special things to include on a special day, the list would not have included all the wonderful things that happened on our Sanctuary cruise. I wouldn’t have dared ask for the things that actually occurred. But sometimes, magic happens.
Magic happened on Sunday, October 16, 2005.
We have a young friend from Switzerland who is in the United States in an English language immersion program. She has always loved whales, largely because of the “Free Willy” films, but has never had the opportunity to see them. So, we planned a whale watching outing, largely for her, but also for ourselves. We’d gone on two other occasions and always had a wonderful time.
I did some research online because I wanted to make certain we chose the tour that would give her the best experience possible. Sanctuary Cruises appealed to me for several reasons. The welfare of the animals themselves figured prominently in the content of their website. And I loved the idea of one tour per day, so the maximum attention could be given to that tour.
The night before our cruise, I lay listening to the pounding of the surf, and was a little anxious about the weather and ocean conditions, but the day dawned sunny, clear, and calm. We arrived at Moss Landing early, had a look at our boat, and said a brief hello to an extremely capable looking man we later learned to be Captain Steph. We returned to the dockside and waited in the warm sunshine, soaking in the atmosphere of the picturesque dock, while the cranky sea lions barked about whatever cranky sea lions bark about.
Right on time, Captain Steph walked toward those of us who had gathered at the dock, and we made our way to the Sanctuary, a solid-looking, immaculately clean vessel with a four-footed first mate. I remember now that Captain Steph told me right before departure that he loved this boat, that the best things always happened on this boat.
Steph told us the swell was high that day, despite the idyllic appearance of the sky and lack of wind, but that if we liked E ticket rides at Disneyland, we would love the trip out to open water. We did. We sat on the seats in front of the wheel, spotting jellies, scanning the horizon, and hanging on tight till our bodies found their natural rhythm to ride the rise and fall of our sturdy little boat’s progress through the swell. That alone was worth the price of admission. We left all the extra hats and coats we had lugged along inside the cabin, never needing them.
Along the way, we saw otters feeding in waters conventional wisdom had told us was too deep for otters to feed in. Captain Steph told us about seeing an otter floating in water of that depth with a crab on it’s chest/menu. I guess Sanctuary isn’t the only object on the sea whose size belies its capabilities.
We were also delighted to see small groups of sea lions, arcing in and out of the water in an impossibly lyrical dance, then stopping as a body and looking back at us, as if to ask if we had gotten their picture, and did we perhaps agree with Captain Steph’s quip that they thought the whales were over- rated.
A very short time into our trip, Captain Steph told us that he had spoken to a ship we could see a couple of miles ahead of us, and that we might be seeing something pretty wonderful fairly soon. Captain Steph slowed the boat’s engine and you could nearly taste the anticipation. I can’t remember which happened first, the sound, the smell, or the sight of our first whales of the day. It was Big Fin and her calf. We spotted their blow and heard that mighty blast as their breath plumed into the sky. Two incredibly graceful forms arched into view, the familial rise and fall of cow and calf, a lifelong rhythm we were fortunate to see at it’s beginning. Steph told us to wait, wait, wait, NOW, take your pictures, and we all got our first shot of those fabulous flukes.
The whales were just being whales and we were completely thrilled. Captain Steph, with uncanny accuracy, born of experience, instinct, and maybe a little assistance from a depth sounder, kept us right in position to get another good look when they broke surface again. More blow! And this time we were close enough for our first whiff of whale breath - once smelled, never forgotten. Another great photo op, and they disappeared again with a graceful flash. Captain Steph pointed out their footprints, the slick left behind by the water being displaced by their mighty flukes. We watched, trying to comprehend the power of a creature which could do that - and be no threat to us.
And this was just the beginning. As Steph said a little later, trying to decide which whale to watch was not the worst problem to have. We saw so many. It seemed everywhere we looked, there was blow and those graceful forms breaking the surface. It was too good to be true, too many whales to see all at once.
We slowly moved away from the whales we had been watching, because as Steph said, the primary concern was not to change the behavior of the animals by our actions.
I wish I could remember the exact sequence of events. Steph said he had spotted another cow and calf, which was so unusual for the time of year. She had been seen before, but didn’t have a name as yet. He again slowed the engine, and waited to see the animal’s response to us. Nothing could have prepared us for what then happened. Nothing. She came to us. In friendship? In curiosity? She came to us and showed us the wonder that is a whale in a whale’s world. Without fear, without aggression, she came to us.
The sea was a little rough, and we made our unsteady way from one end of the boat to the other as she dove and rose again and again. She blew her plume right into the boat with us, and we didn’t even mind her breath. She showed us her belly, she raised her flippers out of the water, she displayed her majestic flukes. We were all in awe, and I remember someone asking if this happened all the time, and Steph saying, no, no, that something truly special was going on.
I don’t know how long this lasted. She never seemed to tire of us or of showing us her beauty, and we would never have tired of her. But Steph, mindful of her calf skirting us a short distance away, said we should no longer engage her, and we prepared to end the most magical moment of our lives.
But it didn’t end. We moved off and she followed us. I watched in fascination as she dove under the boat, moving from side to side, fore and aft, looking at us all, raising her massively elegant head out of the water, diving right beneath us, never touching the boat, though only missing it by mere inches. We reached our hands toward her as she would lift her flipper, then she would roll, and slip beneath the boat, leaving us to watch that gentle thrust of her flukes, using just enough of that amazing power to propel herself, never enough to harm us in any way. I thought my heart would burst from the joy of this once-in-a-lifetime chance to interact with one of the most magnificent creatures of this magnificent ocean. She was so incredibly beautiful, and graceful. Gentle. Then, regretfully, but respectfully, we moved off.
We were busy scanning for the by now familiar puff and blow of a rising whale, when, the unimaginable happened. She surfaced next to us again. It was magic. Pure magic. She showed us every square inch of herself, her beautiful, generous self. “She likes us,” someone cried out. She must have. We saturated our senses with her, and while others may someday discern the reasons for her amazing actions that day, I am content to simply be amazed by them, connected to her by them, changed by them. She awoke something innate deep in my heart, and it clamors to be heard today, and hopefully tomorrow, and everyday for the rest of my life. It was suggested our beautiful friend should be named. I suggested ‘Mon Ami’. Whether that name sticks or not, it is how I will always remember her. My friend. May God grant her and all her kind, long, healthy, contented life.
And thank you, Captain Steph and Sanctuary Cruises for giving us one of the best, the most magical days we will ever know.

8/28/2005: "Dear Steph and Heidi,
We were on holiday from England in August. The day on your cruise was a dream come true! We saw a baby humpback within minutes of leaving the harbour, then a mother and calf, then Risso's dolphins. But to crown it all, you turned the boat around to see a young humpback breaching fully. It is a sight I will never forget! Needless to say, my family have not stopped talking about the experience since they came back, it was a real highlight of our holiday. We loved going out with you, and sharing your knowledge and love of these creatures. Thank you very much. Mel Elsby
8/5/2005: What an incredible adventure!
Hundreds of dolphins, humpbacks with their young and several groups of orcas; plus harbor seals, sea lions, sea otters, lots of birds and one lonely elephant seal. As our friend said, "I did not expect to see so many different animals." We especially appreciate your taking extra time and turning the homeward bound boat around to treat us to the orcas for a killer ending to this unforgettable journey.

8/1/2005: Hello,
My husband, Mark and I, were on your tour Sunday, July 24th and we had an amazing time that day and are still in shock at the sites we saw with the incredible mom and baby humpbacks! We wanted to thank you for the wonderful experience and for your thoughtful concern and caring nature for the passengers and more importantly the whales and all of nature that we were apart of that day.
I could tell from your website and from the patron comments that this was going to be a great experience and it certainly far exceeded all of our expectations. On our next visit to Monterey [and Moss Landing!], we will be calling you and hope for another great adventure!
We had a wonderful 10th anniversary trip returning to the Monterey Bay area with our favorite memory being the whales that day. We also wanted to again wish you both congratulations on your 10th anniversary as well and best wishes to you for a blessed many years to come!
Mark and Naomi McGaughey/Grand Forks, North Dakota
6/3/2005: "This is the best day I can remember"
[Okay, I'm partial, but I really do believe there's nothing like the sea and its creatures to restore your faith in the world. When Community Human Services was given a grant to treat their staff to a rejuvenating break from reality, they decided to go whale watching with us. Chad Hammack wrote this after their cruise:]
"What struck me was the look in the eyes of my counselors. They deal on a daily basis with human misery, suffering, anxiety, heartbreak, as do all who toil in this field. It is hard not to carry around the weighty feelings that grow out of client interactions. But as we left shore, something almost transfiguring began to take place.
"Everything was being left behind; pretty soon landmarks disappeared, houses, freeways, as well as the very human dramas that play themselves out every day. I was watching three of the counselors and it was almost as if with each breath they were sighing and breathing out their own anxieties and burdens, letting go in a meditation of sea and sky.
"One of them remarked about 15 minutes out, 'God, I love this. This is the best day of the year.' Immediately another said, 'This is the best day I can remember.' Eyes were on far horizons and the lilt of the waves was hypnotic as it transported them farther away from the cares of an increasingly distant shore.
"Going to the beach or even the mountains can be restful, but going to sea is transformative, even if it is only for a few hours. And of course the other worldliness was amplified by the majestic creatures that swam into view.
"The most telling comment was from one of the counselors as we headed back in: 'I can't explain it, but this has filled me with hope again.' As, I think, it did for all of us, a true rejuvenation and reminder of what it is to be alive and connected to earth and each other."
5/24/2005: Dear Heidi, Steph, (and of course Sea Biscuit), First off, thank you so much for making our trip so enjoyable! It was our second time sailing with you and, once again, it was amazing!!! You folks are so knowledgeable and your passion and respect for the animals is inspiring. Thanks again, Scott & Mila Hassel
4/25/2005: Thanks again for a wonderful trip yesterday! Being in the middle of that pod of dolphins was just remarkable, like being inside a flock of birds. We had a great time, as always, and look forward to seeing you all again soon. All the best, Larry Pageler
4/25/2005: Steph & Heidi: Thanks for the great trip last Sunday. We had not been out with you before, and wanted to take a "trial run" before bringing company and visitors later this year.
The "Princess of Whales" is a wonderful boat, especially so for photographers. The cabin is a fine place to stow and prep expensive gear, and there is plenty of rail space from which to shoot. We were bemoaning the drizzle and poor light yesterday on our way to Moss Landing, but decided to take the cameras on board anyway.
Our photographic goal was the elusive Orcas, but the enormous pod of lags [Pacific white-sided dolphins] was just spectacular. The Risso's put on a good show as well. Our lone humpback could have been renamed "Laid Back" - a pretty mellow animal.
I am forced to admit that in another life I was a diver and whale/porpoise trainer with Sea World San Diego, the year before they opened and shortly thereafter (1963-64). I have both embraced and regretted that part of my life.
I embrace and treasure the time I had with the cetaceans - thousands of hours in the water with them, caring for them, and "training" them. (Actually they trained me quite well.) Much of my time was spent in veterinary research with Dr. Dave Kinney - attempting to broaden knowledge of cetacean physiology - fascinating stuff. In short, I developed a true love for the tursiops we were working with at the time.
The regrets come from having been a part of it all. I was convinced at the time that what I was doing was helping to educate folks who could never see these animals in their natural environment. I was young, wanted the excitement and adventure of doing something very few people had done at that time, and I just didn't see the big picture. My countless trips on the Sea World collecting boat witnessed the death of many a dolphin and whale. At that time one of the objectives was to keep and train delphinus for the park, but they were so hyper they often appeared to die of shock while still in the sling. It wasn't that the management and crew did not care about the animals. I sincerely believe they did. The mortality rate was the result of ignorance more than anything else - it was a long time ago.
The experience there did lead to better things ethically - a short stint with Cousteau helping with research on fins [fin whales]. I will never forget getting in the water with a 70' fin to attach a heart monitor to the flank. The things you do when you know you are immortal.
Enough of that. I just wanted to express to you that I believe you have the right idea. Getting as many people as possible into the open ocean to see these magnificent animals will do more than any book or TV show. Your dedication is beyond admirable. Thanks for accepting my "confession."
Our best regards, Stan and Anne Foster, Corralitos
3/15/2005: "We really felt we were in the company of people who loved what they were doing and wanted to share their love for the whales and dolphins with us. The whales and dolphins stole the show, but you were gracious hosts and we thank you." Kalyani Comal
2/3/05: Hi Steph and Heidi! My husband and I were on your January 23rd voyage and had the time of our lives! It was my husband’s first time whale watching and my 14th. I attended U.C.S.C. and since graduating in 1993, I have celebrated my birthday every year by coming back to Santa Cruz for a visit to the old stomping grounds and a whale watching trip.
In the past I had always gone whale watching with Stagnaro’s out of Santa Cruz Harbor but after experiencing a trip through your company, I am pleased to announce that Sanctuary Cruises is my company of choice. Really, there is NO competition!!!! If only I had known about you earlier! I just wanted to thank you for such an incredible time!!!!
I came back to Sacramento completely pumped up and excited about my day spent whale watching. I told anyone and everyone who would listen about my trip and your company. I even gave everyone one of your business cards (I pocketed about 15 cards as I was leaving the boat).
Quite a few of my friends have expressed interest in going on a whale watching trip in 2005. They are an excited bunch (about 8 people to date and growing) and the majority have stated a desire to see humpbacks and orcas. I know that there is never a guarantee to see a specific type of whale (or even to see any whales at all) but I was wondering if there is a specific month that you have seen humpbacks and/or orcas in the largest numbers that will increase our odds of seeing them?
I saw your “whales by season” page which was very helpful. I was just wondering if from your years of being in the industry if you have witnessed one particular month (or a couple of months) being better than others? The majority of the people I plan on bringing have never been whale watching before and as the event planner of this group, I want to do everything possible to ensure that they see whales and have the time of their lives so that they will fall in love with whales and possess a strong desire to spend time with them like I do. Your company is the perfect choice!
My husband said that he really appreciated the educational information that you gave over the loud speaker and your warm, smiling personalities. He has stated numerous times that he is looking forward to spending my next birthday with the whales again. Now it looks like he won’t have to wait an entire year!!! I am so excited!
Thank you again for your incredible hospitality! I am looking forward to seeing you both (and Biscuit) on our next trip and am looking forward to receiving any further information that may help me to lock down a more specific time of the year to plan my outing.
I hope you have a wonderful day, calm seas, and an abundance of whales in your horizon! Lisa Ross
[This is nature, so it can be unpredictable, but I told Lisa her best bet just might be May. However, reading back through our Captains Logbook to previous years will help anyone find their best bets. Heidi]
1/18/05: Dear Captain Heidi, I had a fabulous time on the whale watch this past Saturday. I had family from New Jersey with me and we all loved it. So much so, in fact, that some folks from my office are interested in getting a group outing together to go. I wanted to check back and see if there is any price break for bringing a large group of perhaps, 10-20 people? Are there still many whales traveling in April? Please let us know. Thanks again. Carol Lewis
[Not only are there whales in April, there are humpback whales and often in huge numbers! Check our Whale Watching page for "Whales & Dolphins by Season."]
1/3/2004: Hello and Happy New Years to you and the rest of the crew. I hope you are well. I thought of you all this past Friday as I was blessed to see a nice-sized young Northern Right Whale just off our beach here in Sullivans Island, SC. So beautiful! I wouldn't have noticed it had it not been for my experience whale watching with you guys last summer. I was so excited that I thought my eyes were fooling me, but my viewing was confirmed when I returned to my house later that afternoon. I heard on the news of the wonderful rescue of this whale. Heavy lobster lines had constricted it's blow hole to only about 3/4 inch, and they managed to wrestle them free. A real success story.
All the best to you! - DeAnne Vane
12/9/2004: Dear Heidi and Steph: Thank you so much for making my 50th-birthday cruise [and the Biscuit's debut at sea] a day I'll always remember. And please thank the white-sided dolphins, too -- they were a big hit. I've been receiving nothing but rave reviews from my friends, who all had great things to say about the boat, the captain, the crew, and the trip in general. It was perfect!
I didn't even realize it until we were on the road, but you stayed out longer than the three hours we'd agreed on. I really appreciate that -- I know you guys often go the extra mile (literally) to find whales, and I'm sure glad we hooked up with those wonderful dolphins. It was the first time many of my friends had seen dolphins playing alongside a boat, and they were thrilled (as was I, even though I've seen it before -- I haven't gotten jaded yet, nor do I ever plan to).
Michael and I will be back as soon as we can find the time, and I'll be sure to tell the rest of my friends about you folks.
Yours truly, Erfert
10/20/2004:Hi! My husband and I are back home now after our 5 days spent in your SO beautiful part of the world and just wanted to tell you how privileged we feel to have been able to cruise with you last Saturday, October 9th. It was a dream come true for us, something we've wanted to do for many years, and we were so lucky and happy to have found Sanctuary to cruise with.
The sea was a little rough, but the day was gorgeous. The boat was sturdy and really clean and well equipped. The crew were a couple of the nicest guys around, knew their "stuff", treated all of us like guests, and you could tell by their upbeat attitudes how much they enjoy coming to work every day. We saw so many sea creatures--whales, otters, sea lions, birds, maybe even some dolphins in the distance--and were treated to a real education about the Bay and the Marine Sanctuary area, the creatures who live there, the geography of the undersea area and more.
Thank you so much for all you do to educate all of us, to "run green", and to open up this world to people who never would have had the chance to do this otherwise. Yes, thank you, so much.
By the way, my husband enjoyed the cruise immensely...This trip was my 60th and my husband's 65th birthday presents to ourselves, and I am SO glad I had the chance to go out with you. We have 4 grown children who have families of their own, and we've already recommended you to them, and to all the wedding guests at the wedding we went to on Sunday in Aptos.
May you continue to bring joy to us landlubbers for years to come!
Sincerely, Toni (and Lew) Rosenberg
9/27/2004: Hello again, this is Daisy. Today is the funeral of Ruth Alexander who we took on your whale watching tour on 9/2/04, just three weeks ago. She had never been on a boat before and got nauseated, but not sick. She enjoyed it regardless, seeing her first whale up close!
She died Friday Sept 24the of a heart attack at age 54. So young and so full of life, it was totally unexpected. We lay her to rest this day in Plano, Texas.
Thank you so much for helping us enlarge her experiences with so little time she had left. Thank you for listening as this helps us see how much she did, enjoyed and celebrated life.
This is Daisy
9/27/2004: I have been getting email [updates] from Sanctuary Cruises for several years. I first became aware of Sanctuary Cruises when my niece chose you when it was time to scatter my brothers ashes in Monterey Bay. I was impressed by the way Steph handled it and we couldn't have asked for an experience that could have been handled any better. The bay cooperated by being very calm and serene that day also.
Afterward, many of us decided to go whale watching with you and that, too, was an outstanding experience. I have read all of the email and have been impressed not only with what it happening on Monterey Bay, but by Heidi's outstanding writing ability.
It's been a few years and I have intended to write and tell you how much we appreciated you and the services you offer. Better late than never I guess...
I intend to get down there again and take a look at the whales and dolphins and whatever else we might see. Looking forward to "Seeing you out there" again.
Gary Lea
9/8/2004: Dear Heidi and Steph,
Last year I wanted to join you on a cruise with my parents from Germany, but in the end it did not work out. Now, almost 12 months later, on Labor Day weekend, my friend and I finally stepped on board of your beautiful catamaran. After having received your newsletter for weeks, I just could not bear it any longer, I plain HAD to go :-)
And what a wonderful trip it was, the weather was magnificent, the sea calm, and although the whales did not "cooperate" too well according to you, it was still rewarding. And then, already close to Moss Landing, we saw them, the Orcas! Oh my God, what a moment! Everyone on board let out little cries of excitement and ran around for a better view and a good picture!!!
I am sure I was not the only one in the group who had a dream fulfilled right there and then. And you guys turned the boat around to follow the pod rather than entering the harbor as planned. Thank you, thank you!
When we left the boat, Steph said, "Sorry for keeping you so long." He must surely be the only whale watching vessel captain in the Bay who has ever uttered those words. They made me laugh :-)
This was probably my 8th whale watching trip, and while I did some rather dreadful trips out of Monterey, and some very educating ones with the Oceanic society out of HMB, this Sunday morning cruise will certainly have a very special place in my adventure memory collection!
Warm regards, Katja Zuske
9/7/2004: Hello.
I wanted to send you a thank you note for one of the best days I can remember in a long time. My family and I were on the cruise on Labor day and it was fantastic. I must admit, I was a little skeptical and dreaded driving almost six hours to get there for what could have turned out to be just a long boat ride. But I was completely wrong and (happily so)!
Although my little guy spent more than a few minutes throwing up off the back of the boat, it was a great learning experience for him. We try very hard to teach him about respecting wildlife and animals in general and this is sure to be an experience he will remember for a long time. Your cruise was unbelievable. What I thought was the most impressive was your taking the extra time at the end of the cruise for us to really check out those beautiful Orcas (which was the favorite part of the trip for my son and husband).
You could have easily skipped that extra hour at the end and just headed right back to the dock, but you took the time to make sure we had a wonderful day. Thank you so much.
Keep up the good work. Hopefully someday we won't need to talk to people about conservation of the oceans but until then, I hope you reach many more people and help them to see why it is so important.
The McGettigans (Ray, Nikki and Raymond)
9/2/2004: Greetings,
My friends and I were on the cruise Sept 2, 04. I've been whale watching before out of Monterey Wharf.. Your cruise was by far the best I've ever taken. We were closer to the whales then I'd ever been before. Enclosed is a picture that I took that day. My pride and joy until my next trip with you. Soon I hope, to get bigger and better pictures of course. Until then, this is Daisy Lou
9/2/2004: Hi Steph & Heidi,
My husband and I went whale-watching with you in July. I just wanted to write to thank you for a great experience. The first day we went out was not exactly a rousing success--not one whale showed itself. We were disappointed--I've long been enthralled with whales and dolphins, and living in Manitoba, Canada, it's seldom that we're anywhere near the ocean.
However, we accept the capricious nature of . . . well, nature, and decided to give it another shot a couple of days later. We weren't disapointed twice. On our second trip, we saw an array of porpoises, blue whales and humpbacks, including one who breached for us (something I've wanted to see since I was 9 and first started devouring all the information I could find about whales!). We also saw numerous jellyfish, sea otters, sea lions, and even a blue shark.
Of course, the whales were what we came for, but we also wanted to tell you how impressed we were with the quality of your tour. We were pleased to support a business that truly cares about the environment and conservation of marine life.
We have nothing but good things to say about Sanctuary Cruises. We have been on other whale watching tours, and yours stands high above them: You are better informed, demonstrate sincere respect and care for the whales, and actually charge less than any other tour we've been on (your tour was two hours longer, and cost $20 less than the other tour we took this summer!).
Thank-you for helping to make our trip such a fabulous experience. Sincerely,
Kelly Friesen & Michael Cox ~ Manitoba, Canada
8/14/2004: Dear Heidi Tiura, Although I live in the state of Illinois, I sense that I am receiving a degree in the study of whales through you. Many of your articles have been sent to me by a good friend who lives in Salinas whose name is Ada Brewer. Her husband, Bob, and I were fellow fighter pilots during WW II in the same outfit, the 41st Fighter Squadron. We have maintained our friendship mainly through our annual reunions on which occasions several of us meet to relive and recall our overseas days of sixty years ago.
Anyway, Ada has been sending me clippings from her local paper [Salinas Californian] and they have been intensely interesting for me to read. Your articles are often compelling for the word pictures you render of whale sightings and of general marine life in the Monterey Bay area. So this short note is one of appreciation for the good work you do and for being an effective writer.
I am not totally unfamiliar with California. I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. What a wonderful place it was back in the 1930s in which to grow up. I continue to have fond memories of my youthful days in CA. Again, thanks for all you do, and I would love someday to "see you out there."Happy sailing, Richard DeBaugh, Knoxville, IL 61448
8/6/2004: Hi, It's the Nelson's from Key West. Thanks for a wonderful cruise and the mention in your log. I took a little video of the mystery whale [it was a very small gray whale, which is not normally seen here in summer]. Here's the link. http://bellsouthpwp.net/j/o/joelnels/gray%20whale.wmv. It was a great day, one we will never forget.
Joel
A recent email update described cruises aboard Princess of Whales one day and Sanctuary on another. It asked "Whose cruise was best?" Here is one great response!
7/10/04: Well, I guess it's all relative, but I still think the cruise I was on was incredible. It was July 2nd with Captain Don and Noel as first mate. THANKS SO MUCH to all of you for a fantastic birthday week highpoint. The trip was beautiful, the sightings were awesome, and the crew was eager, friendly and knowledgeable. I particularly admire your dedication to marine ecology and conservation, and after seeing these animals in the wild, I will never again consider attending Marine World or the like. These beautiful creatures are meant to be free.
I will always remember my 45th birthday with the Blue Whales.
Thanks again, DeAnne Vane Sullivan's Island, SC
This from folks who are here while he serves as a visiting professor at UC Berkeley before returning to Spain; they joined us last month and it wasn't a great day. We encouraged them to return:
Dear Heidi and Steph:
Thanks for a memorable cruise last Saturday (7/3). It was really a treat to see such wonderful and powerful, as well as graceful, creatures such as the whales and dolphins you guided us to. This was one of the highlights of our stay in California.
I felt the same spotting the whales as seeing wild elephants in the jungles of India. I hope they will be around for many future generations to see... With best regards, Ravindra Gettu
6/28/04: Dear Heidi and Steph,
I had the pleasure of cruising with you a couple of weeks ago, and then joining you again yesterday. I have to say that on the first cruise I could barely hear the commentary, which made me sad. Even not quite hearing what was said, I could sense your enthusiasm for what we were seeing. What a thrill to come on board again yesterday and hear every word so clearly!
I can't imagine how many hours you two have spent on the water observing sea life. By the level of excitement in your voices, it felt like you were seeing this all for the first time, like the rest of us. The new PA system caught every nuance of your passion for what you do. It's what makes a trip with Sanctuary Cruises so special.
There was a moment on the trip yesterday when all of us were silently anticipating the surfacing of a blue whale that had been down 5 or 6 minutes. I was waiting to hear the whale's breath; what I heard was Steph letting out his breath on the PA -he had been holding his breath in excited anticipation along with all of us. And then she surfaced right in front of the boat; his exuberance matched the most enthusiastic novice present.
Every time Heidi described the glow of a blue whale under the surface, her voice glowed with awe. (I will find a way to make that color in glass, and I will send you some beads!) In fact, Heidi's description of that glow on my first voyage, though it was somewhat garbled, is what brought me back for a second look. I thought yesterday was an amazing trip, but I doubt I would have felt that way without your enthusiastic commentary. Yes, I was somewhat seasick, but your commentary always made me perk up.
I think you two are very special and the Sanctuary is fortunate to have two such passionate advocates. The future of the bay and all its inhabitants is made much brighter by your presence. You instill your sense of awe and respect into every passenger (even the seasick ones!), which will lead to better conservation of our oceans. Keep seeing it all for the first time, and I'll be back to see it with you for the first time again.
With admiration and respect, Kathy Stroup
6/1/04~Hello everyone: Just a brief note to let you know how much we enjoyed our trip out with Heidi, Steph and the rest of the crew. It was so absolutely awesome to not only see that many whales, but to have the opportunity to see two of them that close! [The whales gave us a "drive-by" just as we prepared to head in.]
Our cruise out with you is about all that either Carl or myself have talked about since returning to dry land! I can not encourage people enough to join you on your outings. You are so "whale friendly," you don't chase them, nor do you crowd them. You realize that we are the visitors in their natural habitat and for that, I thank you so very much.
We took the [seasickness] precautions that you suggested on the web-site and even rented the [Relief Bands]. By the end of the cruise, we were tired, but not ill at all.
We also took your suggestion and visited Phil's. We can see now why you enjoy it so much! They serve such large portions that Carl and I ordered an appetizer and dinner and shared them!
Heidi, Steph, everyone...if you EVER need a spokesperson-I'll be front and center!
(As we departed the dock, the [Elkhorn Slough Safari] was about to depart and many had seen the boat come in. As comments were made, we shared our experience with the onlookers!)
So-if you haven't noticed, WE LOVED IT OUT THERE WITH YOU FOLKS!! We will return again, Erica Doucette
5/24/04: Hi Heidi: We had a fabulous day yesterday. The kids all had fun, and I'm simply *thrilled* to have finally seen a blue whale! Orcas are now all I have left on my list for "big marine animals of the California coast." Your crew was fabulous - friendly, knowledgeable, strict about rules without being "mean" and obviously really enthusiastic when it came to the subject matter! Ailsa Barrett/Chaperone, Lyceum Santa Clara
5/24/04: Hello: My wife and I were on the 9:30 AM cruise yesterday and had a great time. We are definitely recommending you guys to our friends and family, and will certainly be repeat customers ourselves. You run a first-class operation, and both your knowledge and passion for your field shine brilliantly. Thanks, Adam Lyon
5/17/04: Dear Captain Heidi Tiura: You may not remember us, but we are the Girl Scout Troop #94. The day we rode your boat, The Princess of Whales, we saw a pod of orcas and one humpback whale. Have you named the female humpback yet? And have you seen her again? On the behalf of all of the Girl Scouts there that day, I would like like to say, "Thank you for the experience of a lifetime!!"
Your truly, Lacie Odgers/Girl Scout Troop 94
P.S. Thanks for letting us drive the boat!
[Not only do we remember Troop 94, the day they were out with us will not be forgotten for a long time. We nicknamed that female humpback whale "Mugsy" because she was such a ham, hanging around at our boat for a full hour, never getting more than a few hundred feet away.]
I will remember Lacie for several reasons: She took the time to send a real letter. She has great penmanship. Her spelling was perfect (these goes a long way with me). But mostly, she has that most wonderful quality, generosity of spirit. Lacie is from Mariposa, just outside of Yosemite. Read back in Spring updates for our tales from Yosemite, both terrific and heart-breaking.]
[The first few emails below are in response to the Mother's Day 2004 Cruise, during which we witnessed an attack on gray whales by orcas. National Geographic had us re-create the cruise for a documentary on orcas and gray whales.]
5/11/04: Dear Heidi: Thank you for writing so beautifully about the day that we experienced this past Sunday and the hugely mixed emotions that were a part of it. My 14 year old daughter and I are still processing the haunting images. Because I have a deep love of the whales and have dreamed rich dreams of/with them for many years, I expected the images to show up in my dreams last night, but they did not. But I will be holding this experience in my heart for some time, I suspect. Anyway, as I told you, I pray never to see that again, but I WILL go out again to encounter and be touched by these massive, magnificent creatures.
All the best to you, Maggie Harris
5/10/04: Dear Heidi: I volunteer at the Aquarium in the information booth and I have been touting your cruises since a couple years ago when I was on board. You two run a fine ship with true concern for our oceans and their critters.
My name is Lolita DuBose. My Daughter, Debbie, gave me the Mother's Day gift of our trip. Little did we know how spectacular it was going to be. I am putting together a PhotoShow of the event. If it turns out half way good I'll send you a copy even though you probably have MANY others. Lolita
5/3/2004: Not all of the comments we get are lengthy, but they can sure say a lot. This is what Gary Vosters received from his friend after their cruise:
"I've just got to say that the whale watching adventure was one of the top 10 best times I have had in my life! Thanks for inviting me."
Kevin Tally
5/3/2004: OH MY GOSH: What an amazing experience. I'm not one who usually has a problem expressing myself, but I found myself speechless throughout a lot of the cruise and even later on in the day. I just kept thinking about it :) I don't know if I've ever felt as "at one" with nature as I did that morning! It was truly one of the best experiences I've ever had. We will definitely be coming back and bringing "the husbands" to experience it as well.
I think one of the things that struck me the most was the sheer size of the mammals. I don't think you can understand that from a picture or from reading about it -- The first time one of them rose to the surface, I was just amazed by the proportions of the beautiful creature! Amazing!
It was also just a really neat experience to share with my mom. We were both really excited to be there together, and it will be something I'll always remember having done with her. We though a lot about my grandmother - who passed away last year - on the trip because she was a very outdoorsy person and we felt she was with us in spirit that day.
Thank you so much for getting us on that boat! As I said before, we'll definitely be back.
~Sierra Rendon
PS: Your crew was highly professional, knowledgeable and really nice people.
4/10/2004: Heidi and Steph: I would like to personally thank you and your staff for a wonderful and exciting day at sea! Not only were you all professional and courteous but also your entire staff and both of you made the day one that my niece and I will never forget!
The cruise on April 2, 2004, was wonderful, exciting and educational. It is something I have wanted to do for years. Getting to see two humpback whales that close and learning more about them was an experience I wish everyone would do. Not only for the thrill and excitement we had, but, to learn that we need to take care of nature for our future generations, for ourselves and for all creatures. Seeing the excitement that the staff had even though this was their "job" gave me a different perspective on what is important to each of us.
I will recommend Sanctuary Cruises to everyone I can. Your tour was educational and everyone was treated with care and concern. Even those that did not have sea legs, I believe, learned much and still had a great time due to your staff. I do not believe that any other company could reach the level of excellence that you all showed to us.
Please thank your entire staff for such a wonderful experience!
I now have an experience that I will cherish and a new knowledge that I will share because of all of you. I wish you the best in your endeavors! This may be a business for you but I know by the way we were all treated that this is a love and joy that runs deep for you and Steph and your staff.
Thank you, Stephanie Terrell
Manteca, CA
3/9/2004: You and Steph are what makes Sanctuary Cruises extra special for us. Your knowledge and enthusiasm, along with your keen sense of humor and "whale finder" insight, and especially the warmth, love and respect you show for one another truly make Sanctuary Cruises an experience like no other.
Denise Noack/Frequent Flyer along with her husband Tom
From a couple who spent three days cruising with us and who really made their trip from England a Moss Landing Affair. I wrote about them in a recent Captain's Update:
3/9/2004: Hi Heidi & Steph,
Well, we made it back to England despite the weather on the Big Sur, who was it that said it never rains in Southern California? [or Central California] Our experience on the 3 days spent with you will live long in our memories and the video/photos will also remind us of those magical moments.
We loved both boats, but as you said on your web page Sanctuary was the favourite, being that more intimate with the surroundings and the crew who equally made our experience so enjoyable.
The Orcas on the first day were amazing; to see at such close proximity the most beautiful yet deadly creature of the oceans alone made the trip worthwhile, no wonder the seals [sea lions] on the sea buoy wanted out of the water!
Our time in Moss Landing was unique from Melanie's hospitality in the Captains Inn, Ray's Margaritas in The Whole Enchilada, the food at Phil's Fish Market and to you both for giving us the opportunity to be so close to the creatures of the sea. Saving now to come back some Fall to see the Blues.
Love and Best Wishes
Lesley & Gary Taylor
1/21/2004: Dear Heidi and Steph,
You both do such a fine job communicating to the public about whales, life, peace, pain, forgiveness - all those important subjects.
I was especially touched by [a recent update] by Heidi, and by Steph's tribute last week on the radio to [Drew Gashler of MBARI who was] killed in the avalanche. You are both doing public ministry and I appreciate it.
Deborah Streeter
1/20/2004: Dear Captains Heidi and Steph,
Thank you for the GREAT cruise today! The boys loved it. It would have made your hearts sing to hear them share with parents and friends about their adventure and the things they learned or are thinking about now.
As a mother, I especially appreciate how you spoke directly to kids (of all sizes) on board. I know my own love and respect for the ocean was enriched today. What a wonder to see that happen for our children.
Finally, is there a good way to stay in touch with what you two are doing. For instance, the other good times of the year to see other migrating whales or any programs you might be offering.[Yes, sign up on this page to get email updates!]
Thank you both again for a wonder-filled day and for your sweet spirits,
Maggie (Elijah's mom)
1/4/2004: Hi! [Yesterday] was the best gray whale trip I've been on. On many of the other boats I've gone with the crew are really just sailors; that is they do their work, speak only when spoken to, don't really know much about the wildlife. Your guys were friendly and smiling, initiated many conversations, knew what was going on, completely different.
In addition, the quality of the narrations Steph gave was head and shoulders above most of the others. It's not that the others said anything incorrect. The difference is the passion. That passion makes all the difference to listeners. When it sounds like it's just a job, just reading a script, the passengers will tune it out.
The final piece was Steph's clear understanding of how to work with the whales. We had spectaclar views...
Steve Johnston/Senior Interpreter, Monterey Bay Aquarium
12/1/03: Dear Heidi and Steph: Our whale watching trip this past Friday was nothing short of INCREDIBLE! I have always wanted to see blue whales, but never thought I'd be so fortunate to see several of them, plus humpbacks, plus hundreds of Risso's dolphins in one trip. Our group of seven could not stop talking about the trip. Since returning home, I have told many of my co-workers and friends about the trip (and about your website where they can find out about scheduling their own trip). I hope this pays off for you with some new customers.
Thanks so much for the once-in-a-lifetime trip (though we'll definitely be back for more whale watching experiences with you in the future)!
Sincerely,
Paula Burks (a member of the Ladd party)
11/6/03: Dear Heidi and Steph: This is a belated Thank You for a wonderdul cruise. We were on our first trip to California from our home in the UK with our three daughters and booked up with you for a cruise in Monterey Bay on 2nd. On the day I didn't feel confident about the trip as I'm pregnant and was concerned about sea sickness so I made the difficult decision not to come. I'd like to say thank you very much for refunding my payment for the trip.
The cruise was absolutely marvelous and everything we'd hoped for. The girls were totally captivated by seeing humpback and blue whales, as well as hundreds of dolphins swimming around and underneath the boat.
We gave them the choice of going to Disneyland or going whale watching (some slightly biased opinions taking place on our part!). They chose to go for the whales and there have certainly been no regrets. In fact, they now describe it as the highlight of our holiday.
We were extremely impressed with the quality of your cruise, the fascinating (and unusual!) commentary and your knowledge, understanding and respect for the Monterey Bay environment and its inhabitants.
Having got round to writing this I looked up your email address on the web site and was amazed to discover that you had recorded a programme for BBC Radio 4. How wonderful! I'm delighted that we haven't missed the programme. We listen to Radio 4 a lot and will certainly be tuning in that next week.
Thanks again and best wishes,

Comments on Steph's radio program "Life on the Bay": 10/25/2003: Dear Steph Dutton,
I have been following your programs about marine snow with great interest but missed this morning's (Friday) report. Is there any way I can either read or hear it? [The 90 second program airs Monday-Friday at 7:49 a.m. and 5 p.m.on KUSP FM (88.9) as well as online at www.KUSP.org.]
You are doing wonderful work and a great service to the community. Thank you for your fine contribution to our knowledge and understanding of ocean life.
Sincerely,
Miriam Ellis, Ph.D. University of California/Santa Cruz
10/23/2003: Hello Captain Heidi: Just got back to the UK and we wanted to drop you a note to thank you for another excellent trip on Sunday 12th October. It was the highlight of our holiday! Kind regards,
Mick & Gill Williams
9/25/2003: Dear Heidi and Steph: I wanted to thank you for helping us to get onto your cruise two Sundays ago. Being a [new] parent is a great adventure so far, but we still miss our "other adventures" like cruising the bay with you guys. Getting out on the water together, being able to hold hands and drink in each other's uninterrupted company while watching gorgeous creatures was an unspeakable treat for us.
This was our fifth trip out with you, and every cruise seems to have its own distinct flavor. The Mayan have a word for it: "kakachki". This refers to that moment when all the flavors of a dish are in such perfect harmony that the food sings in your mouth. Well, every trip we've been on with you guys has been kakachki. The giant Mola Mola (photos attached) we saw was my husband's favorite this time, mine was the blue whale lunge feeding, and the blue shark swimming at the water's surface.
None of this would have been possible had you not been so understanding about our being short on cash that day. Then to come home and find out that you were not charging our credit card for the additional $$ was too much. [Their ATM card turned out to be de-magnetized!] We thank you for your kindness and generosity. Of course, I've seen that same generosity in action every time we've cruised with you guys. It's evident in your use of bio-diesel, your commitment to respectfully approaching the animals, and the great spirit of your narration and your emails.
I will continue to send everyone I meet your way. (They all come back with the same review: Spectacular!) Not because you're nice to us (which is so much appreciated!!) but because you are nice to the whales. You did a very nice thing for us, and we greatly appreciate it. See you out there!
With great appreciation for who you are and what you do,
Libby Palomeque and Rich Ross
We received this after Labor Day weekend, which was three days of extraordinary whales and people. John's blue whale shot was a knockout. The whale surfacing alongside our stopped vessel was beyond description!
9/3/2003: Dear Captain Heidi: We had a fabulous time, yesterday. You, your husband and your crew did a great job and made this one of our top experiences, ever. The sightings got more thrilling each time. Thankyou!!! Here's a collage I sent out this morning to our friends across the country.
John S. Eller, IBM Sales Executive
PS: My niece, Jennifer, caught the Blue Whale, on video, diving under the boat just off the starboard side. Fantastic footage.
8/31/03: Hi there! Now back in the UK. We are telling all our friends about the magnificent creatures we saw in the Pacific with you. We had many happy times in the USA, but the highlight was certainly the Whales and was the best gift we could have had for our Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Many thanks to you both for such happy memories. Len and Sylvia Coburn.
8/10/03: Dear Steph & Heidi: We can't thank you enough for providing such an amazing experience for us on our August cruise. We spent a week in California, but our hours with you were by far the highlight of our trip. Our expectations, and hopes, were to glimpse a couple of whales. We would have been satisified with that, but were blown away with the show we were given! It is truly a humling experience to see a blue whale surface 20 feet off the bow of the boat. Amazing! The two of you are amazing, as well, and we truly admire you and the job you do, not only in helping people like us experience the ocean's wonders first hand, but also in helping to save and protect such phenomenal creatures. Your good intentions were very apparent when you took a small detour to retrieve a plastic bag from the water. If all humans were as caring and passionate about Mother Nature as you are, she wouldn't be in so much trouble right now. Your enthusiasm at seeing whales is contageous and genuine, like you were seeing them for the first time, as many of us were. Our experience was one that we will remember for the rest of our lives, and we can't wait to get to California again to go out whale watching with you!
Josh & Amy Schu from Michigan
7/21/03: Steph & Heid: We went on a cruise with you on 7/15/03 and had a wonderful time. You really know how to make the experience memorable. I was so impressed that I plan on returning SOON. My wife and I both work at the Central California SPCA and we were pleased to see your dogs are such a part of your lives. They are sweeties. Thanks again for everything and we will see you soon. I will tell all our friends and our staff at the SPCA to vist you.
Stephen & Margaret Goode
Central California SPCA Fresno, CA
7/3/2003: Dear Heidi and Steph: The campers and staff are truly enjoying their time on board the Princess of Whales, made all the more special by your passion, commitment and enthusiasm about the marine environment. We all leave the cruises a little wiser and with a great sense of our collective responsibilities as stewards for the ocean and its wonderful creatures. Sanctuary Cruises sets the standard for excellence in all areas. We are proud to be on your boats.
Warm regards, Program Manager Camp S.E.A. Lab, California State University at Monterey Bay
6/11/2003: Hi Steph: We're always delighted to have estuarine conservation research featured to a wider audience than what we can reach, and you do such a fine job making science exciting and comprehensible to laypeople.
Dr. Kerstin Wasson, Research Coordinator
Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
5/16/2003: Thanks for such a wonderful day this last weekend: (I'm the passenger who cried because I was so overcome with joy and awe at getting to see so many whales!). For years, I didn't want to go whale watching because I thought it might harass the whales. I am so glad to have found guides who so profoundly respect these magnificent animals. Can't wait to go again!
Linda O'Maley
5/5/2003: Greetings Heidi and Steph: I'll begin with my praise of Steph's NPR program "Life on the Bay." What a refreshing program with so many perspectives - a welcome break from the news these past few months too. I can't tell you how thrilled I was to hear you highlighting Kirsten Carlson and her work on our Threatened and Thriving poster series. How do I subscribe to the newsletter Bill gets? [Bill Douros, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Superintendent; you can all get this update by signing up on Talk to Us] He's constantly commenting on it and I would like to join the fray. Most recently he forwarded the issue featuring "Humpbacks are Here." He wants to know if we can get the contact info or use you to contact the passenger who took the picture [David Tillotson's great humpback breach]. We'd like to see if we can get permission to use it for educational purposes. In looking for the newsletter, I discovered you have many very nice photos of marine mammals. You do a great job with a difficult subject. We would like to know if we may use some of your images, too. Please let me know if your images are available for use and what the fee would be if we wanted to use them for signage along the Sanctuary's coast. We're doing some joint signage along the Big Sur Coast with the Forest Service and need some good Gray Whale images.
Finally, a personal thanks for all you do. You go the extra mile (and expense often) with the goal of making the planet a better place. There need to be more like you. You guys are super!
Good seas to you! Dawn Hayes/Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Education & Outreach Coordinator
2/26/03: I LOVE getting your emails. Can't wait to cruise again with you guys soon! You two are amazing people... thank you for all you do.

2/15/03: Dear Steph and Heidi: We were aboard Sanctuary yesterday for my son's 9th birthday! What a treat it was for him and the rest of our family. We saw whales and an amazing school of dolphins that surrounded the boat and gave us all such a thrill! Scott [their captain] and Noel [their deckhand] were great. Scott's persistence in getting us a whale sighting and his information about the sea life was so interesting and appreciated. Noel was so nice and enthusiastic. What a great person to have on board. Please tell them thank you! We'll definitely tell all our friends.
Sincerely, Michele, Dan, Drew and Sara Rossi.
The next email was from Ruth Vreeland, spirited city council person for Monterey and a terrific person all-round. We lost Ruth in 2003 and it broke our hearts; reading her letter will give you an idea why.
1/5/02: Oh Boy! My family was estatic..........kids are wearing their shirts and planning what they are going to write in their journals....Colette said that she will have to write about 80 pages about her expereince in her school Journal...Jake is already planning to tell his teacher (a great guy) all the ins and outs of whale watching...in addition to the spectacular experience of boating in and with the dolphins!!!!!!!!! What a day...the baby even tried to tell her daddy about the BOAT! The dolphins were her joy! Steph was great in his guidance of the education ...my college grads were impressed.... The discussions from the bridge were great...the supportive teammates were super...Educational...special...fun...family togetherness...what a day...wish I could find words like my friend Heidi can find to express excitement and joy...
Thanks for the Memories until we meet again.................love...Ruth (Ruth Vreeland is a great City Council member for Monterey!)
12/25/02: Dear Heidi and Steph: Here we are in the cold part of Michigan with temperatures in the 25 degree range and about 1 to 2 inches of snow on the ground. We are going to celebrate Christmas with all our kids tonight. But we wanted you to know that The Hoekstras have YOU on our special list to say Thank you to for all the joy you gave us this summer.
We will never forget the hard work and effort you put in to get us to see those gorgeous giants of the oceans, the BLUE whale. We still stop and think about those moments with awe, as we watched those gentle giants glide by the ship.
Thank you both for making our year wonderful with your encouragement and efforts. You are beautiful people and we shall never forget.
Phil and Jean Hoekstra, from cold, cold Michigan, with love
10/28/02: Dear Heidi and Steph: Everyone had a great time on our dinner cruise. The food was good and the whales were wonderful! May God bless you both. Come and visit us at Jenness Park.
Randy and Jackie Brown/Jenness Park
8/19/02: Greetings Heidi & Steph: Thank you for the wonderful day on the bay. It was a great experience we will always remember. Seeing those magnificent creatures in their own environment helps me set a more accurate scale to the importance of nature in a broad sense. It's not unlike the first time I viewed the rings of Saturn or saw the Andromeda Galaxy with my own eyes from the darkness of the desert. We humans (our worries and priorities) are really insignificant if you attempt to take in the whole picture.
There are few folks with the skill and desire to take a large group and offer this type of experience. I'm glad you do! Best regards,
Gary Vosters & Family
8/8/2002: Dear Heidi: I'm so pleased that you enjoyed our group--they really are terrific. And they were very pleased with the cruise--couldn't say enough good things about it--the service, food, wine and of course, the dolphins. I don't know how you managed to get all those dolphins to come along with us, but that was quite a feat and we sure appreciated it. I hope I'll be able to do this again sometime. Pat/American Association of State Colleges and Universities
7/29/2002: Heidi and Steph,
It's been a couple years since I was in Monterey -keeping up with your newsletters helps me feel connected. You two are living one of my dream lives and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to follow along vicariously. Every message you send renews my faith in the goodness of people who follow their hearts. Thanks for all your positive energy and Happy Anniversary! Love to all, Yvonne

7/8/2002: Dear Captains,
Thank you so much for working to make biodiesel a viable alternative to boaters everywhere. You are true leaders. The ocean, its wildlife and future generations thank you.

5/12/02: Heidi-
I just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful day. Even though Megan felt seasick, she is still talking about you and Steph like you were her new best friends. What a great 12th birthday to remember. You both truly love what you do and it shows. Your love of nature clearly comes across to all your guests in an outward, warm and personal feeling. Thank you both for a magnificent day!
Pam and Megan Hauck/Stockton, CA.
PS-We look forward to joining you once again in the near future!

4/24/2002: Regarding Our Update on Biodiesel and ANWR
I am feeling proud inside, though I have nothing to do with your work in the Bay. Way inland in Utah (remember us last August?) we get no coastal news, but we have been following the national news on the Alaska drilling issues. After reading Eye of the Whale, and sharing tidbits with my children, these issues have been important to us. We were very excited yesterday morning to read about the battle won on the front page of our paper. [No drilling in ANWR; defeated again!] Congratulations to all who are making a difference! Great things CAN happen due to the vision of just a few.
You have such fans here at our house in Utah! Mary and I read your newsletters as soon as they arrive. She has a scrapbook of them because she likes to look at the whale pictures. They are not all Willy anymore, as through your pix she is learning more about them. Jesse (my 15 year old naturalist) immediately recognized this latest picture as a humpback and began to tell me a few little bits of information about Orcas. Trevor (the seasick boy) wants to try the bracelet [Relief Bands: great anti-seasickness devices available on our boats] next time we visit, but is pretty happy volunteering at the local animal shelter with critters who keep their feet on solid ground. He is interested in becoming a veterinarian. At 12, this may change, but its a great career! Mary is saving up for her next trip with you. Thanks for giving us such a life-changing experience.
Chris (alias "Utah")

You are our angels...
Larry & I have just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with a gift we never imagined... We spent a long weekend at Onterra RV Park in Marina and had no plans until we arrived as to what we would do for the weekend. We danced under the stars on our RV site and on Friday morning we decided we would like to do some whale watching. We've had great luck this year at Pt. Reyes watching the mothers and babies at the lighthouse and saw many, many grey whales spouts from Bodega Head. then we were blessed with two of the most dedicated people we have ever known [Steph and Heidi] and were fortunate enough to dance with a pod of Orcas.
Steph and Heidi, you are truly an inspiration! Your determination to find whales ended up with an unforgettable, lifetime memory for us. To dance with a pod of beautiful Orcas was unpredictable, unimaginable and completely unexpected. And that's what you did. You did not frighten them, you did not intimidate them, you simply stood by and watched. You gave us such a beautiful gift for this special time in our lives. We thank you. We love you. We wish you so much joy and happiness in your lifetime work. Thank you for an incredible experience. We will be your advocates in voicing to the world the desperate need for this fight. And last but not least, Heidi, you make great hot dogs!!

4/5/2002: Thanks:
We were whale watching with you on Tues April 2 when we saw the 2 humpbacks. What a great trip and your thoughtfulness and professional approach was admirable.
We hope your business does well and will recommend you to anyone we know headed to California.
Thanks Again and best wishes.

From a friend up in the area near Neah Bay, Washington, where the Makah Indians kill whales for no good reason because there isn't one unless you are starving and have nothing else to eat. That's not the case on the reservation littered with pizza joints, cafes and home to a large, modern supermarket. It's enough to make good people crazy.
3/28/2002: Heidi:
Your reports are always so marvelous. Thanks for them and for your unique, beautiful words which help put me right there with you and Steph. As to the gray whales--I heard an announcement this morning on KONP that three Makah whaling families are planning to kill a whale or two beginning as early as next week. Arrrgh! Here we go again. Please tell the whales you see to keep themselves and their babies safe by steering well clear of Cape Flattery and Juan de Fuca strait. We'll do what we can up here, but we are so small in numbers. . . Sure do miss you two.

Dear Steph and Heidi,
"I will never be the same!"
On Sunday [2/24/02], I not only viewed 2 magnificent whales but the school of dolphins was sacred and indeed a privilege.
I am at a loss for words but know that you can relate...few people in the world experience this.
I shall never forget that day and it will be forever pressed between the pages of my mind. In closing, your "devotion to passengers is boundless." I felt like welcomed family and thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Best regards, Cynthia Pettis

2/2002: Steph and Heidi,
I just wanted to let you know how great you guys are. I read in one of your newsletters that you had been chosen as one of the top Whale Watching Cruises and they were right on.
Yours was the first cruise I had ever been on and it was incredible. Steph was the captain that day and he was great. He even stayed out longer than planned so we could see dolphins - my favorite. We went a couple of other times and didn't see much, but the boat ride was still really fun.
I never really appreciated your cruises until I went on a different one. My husband took me to the Whale Watching Festival in Monterey a couple of weeks ago and we decided to take a tour with [we would rather not advertise who this was--maybe they will change!]. It was awful. The woman who was narrating the trip was dull and boring. It was obvious she didn't enjoy her job and wasn't excited about anything we saw.
It was a 3 hour boat ride and we spent almost the entire time looking at the same pod of whales. (Steph told us this wasn't good for the whales) Then as we were leaving to head back to dock, we saw a pod of Risso dolphins. They didn't even stop to look at them, just sped right past them to head back in. It was a relief when the trip was over and I didn't really get to see dolphins.
The next trip I took was with [another company; maybe they will change!] on a field trip for my son's homeschool group. They were no better than [the other one]. We spent most of the time with one pod of whales and when we came by some Common Dolphins (this is what I have been waiting to see) we cruised through them once and we were off. But the worst part of the trip was the deckhand, what a pig. He was a chain smoker and kept throwing his cigarette buts into the bay. I called him a pig : ) but that didn't seem to phase him. What a jerk!
I really appreciated the enthusiasm you guys show for your work. It is obvious you love what you do and respect and love all life in the bay. So I wanted to say thanks! and hopefully we'll see you soon (and some Common Dolphins).
Sincerely, Jerusha Kozina

2/14/2002:
I've just read another wonderful e-mail update of Sanctuary Cruises and each time after I read your e-mails, I want to reply with a huge thank you... and finally this time I am!!
Heartfelt thanks for taking the time to share your stories, your visions and your love for the whales. I greatly enjoy each and every update. Your writings always fill me with hope and appreciation, and since I cannot get out on the Bay as often as I'd like, your letters also keep me connected to those amazing creatures of the deep.
But there is no replacement for the real thing... my family is way past due for a trip on Princess of Whales -- and hopefully soon we'll take advantage of one of your "specials" and join you folks for a cruise. Thanks again for all that you do to keep our awareness alive and our hearts open. We Pollacks are grateful! Naomi Pollack
[The specials Naomi refers to are included only in our email updates. You can sign up to receive them on this page.]

11/21/2001: Dear Heidi,
Just wanted to wish you happy holidays and let you know how much I enjoy your e-mail newsletters. I have been out on the Princess of Whales three times in the last year and have had a wonderful time every time. You guys provide a wonderful atmosphere and I recommend you to many people who want to go whale watching.
I am the humane educator at the SPCA of Monterey and have been very impressed with the fundraiser and causes that you support with your business. I have also been lead researcher on the bottlenose dolphin project with Pacific Cetacean Group since 1998. Our little boat lives in Moss Landing Harbor :)
I as well have never seen orcas in the bay so I can relate with Tina!!! Anyway, just wanted to express my thanks and let you know what a fabulous job I think you are doing!
Dolphin Smiles,
Lisa Giesick
9/21/2001: From Another Person Who Brings Light
How wonderful to know that there are people like you bringing light into the world!! We hope to see you again soon.
Phil and Jill Lesh
[Phil and his family joined us for whale watching Sunday, September 9th. It was a calm, soft, gentle day and we had blue whales feeding all around us. He later wrote that their experience on Sunday helped them face the terrible events on Tuesday. This email here came after we announced the Peace and Resolve Red Cross Cruise. Phil is no stranger to supporting good causes himself. Check out his web site at The Phil Zone. If you're wondering if this is THE Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead, it is. He now has Phil Lesh and Friends and their fall tour starts in November. Phil has been on an odyssey of the spirit that is remarkable. You can learn more about it on his web site; it's time well spent. Here is what he had to say following the terrible events September 11th:
"Love Will See Us Through!
I must listen to my heart, which tells me to stop and absorb these life-changing events before I can perform on stage again. I therefore have cancelled our Fillmore benefit concert, and I will be with Warren and Gov't Mule at the Warfield in heart and spirit, but will not be performing.
We will proceed with our November Fall tour as announced. We have had many inquiries regarding people wanting to donate their Fillmore ticket refunds to Unbroken Chain for disaster relief. Grateful Dead tickets (GDTS TOO) or Ticketmaster must first refund your money and then you can mail it to Unbroken Chain (see address below) with "Relief Fund" written on the envelope. The Unbroken Chain Foundation is in the process of updating our site and we will keep you posted of our efforts to help, hopefully in many ways, the victims of this horrendous tragedy. We will make sure all of the money collected goes to do the most good.
I will also be doing blood drives, although we have been asked to wait a couple of weeks when the supply will need to be boosted. I hope to take the next couple of weeks to reflect on how the world that my children live in has changed. I fear that we as a nation still have much to face. The nation, and especially New York City, have shown extraordinary courage and love in the face of these terrorist acts. May we continue to react with courage, tolerance, and humanity; and always with love in the dream. - P h i l"

Dear Heidi & Steph,
I am writing on behalf of me and my girlfriend, Erica to thank you for the most wonderful and majestical time we had on your cruise. My girlfriend has always been captivated by whales out in the wild so figured what better birthday gift could there be than to take a cruise with you guys.
What we saw was beyond words to us. We were in total awe of the beauty of nature and its beings. We feel so fortunate to have have witnessed dolphins literally swimming beneath us and Blue Whales so close up in the wild. Adding to that was your professionalism and sincere hospitality. Afterwards, my girlfriend told me that that was the best birthday gift she had ever received! Her birthday was on the 23rd of August by the way. I have you guys to thank for that! I took video footage and my girlfriend took pictures that day. Please feel free to check them out at:
http://www.ericalopez.com
Ever since we have put the pictures and video on our website, so many family members and friends have been asking about your cruises. We tell them to go to www.sanctuarycruises.com because they are the best . Thank you so much for the breath taking experience that you have given us.
Sincerely, Jimmy Tran

Dear Steph, Heidi and Fluke:
What a brilliant time we had on your boat with Vinz's friends from the Bach Festival earlier this summer. You told us when we get off the boat that it doesn't get any better... Well, thank goodness I took that comment with a grain of salt, and two weeks later couldn't resist coming out with you again! This time I brought three visitors with me - one from Barcelona, one from North Carolina and another from Australia. The day was gray and drippy, not untypical for Monterey in the summer, and they weren't at all sure about this whalewatching idea. Setting off through the slip at Moss Landing, the water was glassy smooth. Auspicious, I thought. I was hoping we might at least see the blues again. We first saw the porpoises arrowing towards us, rooster tails flashing. My visitors were now impressed.
Then there they were: blues weaving around the boat. But first, something quite extraordinary appeared, quite close to us - and Steph's voice even squeaked a little as he identified it: a sperm whale!! It's squid season, to be sure, so this one must have cruised into the Bay for a feed. Shivers ran down my back as I thought about these toothed whales feeding on giant squid in the canyon. But if that were not enough, the next sight was a water ballet off Moss Landing power station - humpbacks rocketing out of the water and casually waving their giant flippers in the air! By this time, the day had cleared and water and sky were competing for the bluest blue. Hard to decide what to watch first as the humpbacks made their way round us and the blues swished by. The giant mola mola distracted us for a while too, staring up at us with her glassy eye.
As time ran out, we found ourselves encircled by a school of dolphins, their dorsal fins cutting ominously through the water. My visitors told me they would never forget this experience, and Steph and Heidi, I have to tell you that I've spent some time whalewatching during the last fifteen years, but this stunning day ranks right up there with San Ignacio and the baby grays.
Thank you so much! See you again very soon, I hope.
Jacolyn

Hi,
I'm one of the parents that came on your boat Aug. 30th with the Calaveras High school. The tour was great. You did a wonderful job of educating and informing us. Your vessel is beautiful and well kept. Thanks for a great adventure and taking good care of us.
Sincerely, Margaret Collins

Heidi,
You're the best! I'm sending you a copy of Bridges Homeschooling Newsletter with your article. I loved it! I love your passion for serving humanity, the animals of our bay, and the bay itself. Thanks for all your wonderful work!

4/28/2001: What Kind Words!
Heidi and Steph
My daughter and I joined you on a whale watching cruise on April 22. We enjoyed the trip very much. It was my daughter's first trip and she was enthralled by the whales.
We have recommended Sanctuary to many of our friends and we will be making a couple of trips down to visit you in June and July. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality aboard the Princess of Whales and for sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge of the sea and its living creatures. We look forward to seeing you soon.

From our killer whale trip (orcas!)
I just found this email. It came in a few weeks ago, but ended up at the bottom rather than the top. Pretty nice thoughts!
Dear Heidi and Steph:
On behalf of all of the ladies from Half Moon Bay we would like to express our heartfelt thank you. The crew members were wonderful, accommodating and went the extra mile to give us an exciting and fascinating adventure. Cruising on your beautiful and comfortable multihulled boat was a pleasurable experience. The double decked boat allowed us a number of viewing options insuring everyone a perfect view.
The sightings of whales were spectacular. Just imagine how surprised and delighted we were at seeing two different pods of ORCAS in the wild.
Awesome! We are still high from the experience. We realized we shared something very special on Sunday.
I am telling everyone I meet about my experience and passing out your business cards. Keep up the good work with an eye on conservation and education. Your message about these giant creatures of the wild needing our respect and protection leaves us with the feeling of stewardship. Keep raising our consciousness.
We'll be back!

3/30/2001: From an Ole Salt
Captains Steph and Heidi,
I wanted to tell you how much my wife, daughter and I enjoyed your whale watch trip. Enclosed are some pictures of that momentous moment of me at the wheel!! Also enclosed is a whale letter opener which I carved for that special occasion.
Thanks again, from an Ole Salt, George Roaf
P.S. Old woodcarvers never die, they just whittle away.
[We have put up the photos of George on the catamaran. He is the fellow I wrote about in an update a few weeks ago who served in WW II. We thought he should take a turn at the wheel. The whale letter opener is beautiful and we can't wait to get a letter from a whale so we can use it!]

3/19/2001: "What a treat!!!!"
Dear Heidi and Crew,
We just returned home from California and during our trip we took your cruise on the new boat. What a treat!!!! We never knew it could be so exciting. I think I saw 5 whales that day. You all definitely know where to find them. My husband loves his hat he bought. I have a hard time trying to get him to take it off.
Thanks again for making our visit on Sanctuary Cruises a very special treat.

2/15/2001: "Pretty greetings out of Germany!"
This email arrived today and I fell in love with these people all over again. Although their English might not be much, they do better than I would in German. As Steph says, though, their hearts shine through:
Hello Heidi!
Pretty greetings out of Germany. I read with interest your pages in the Internet and remembered many pictures, that I be allowed to experience during our excursion to the whales. My girlfriend and I have already much seen, but the Trip to the whales was simply brilliant! Above all the type pleased us, go around is like your with the customers and the animals - one stiller observer and has not the feeling as if one would disturb these miracles of the nature. We spent our vacation in the May 2000 in the USA and experienced an absolute Higlight with your excursion. Once again many thanks to for this crazy experience - we these impressions be never forgot! We desire hopefully create you for the future all goods and love - to undertake we it yet once an excursion with you!
With the best wishes

"I felt the need to become involved..." Boy, did she!
1/2001: Hi Heidi,
Hope the holidays were joyous and safe for yall. Just wanted to tell yall what's going on down here. When we got home I felt the need to become involved in something that has an effect on our friends. The Marine Mammal Stranding Network was really the only thing I could think of in our part of the country. Come to find out, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama's networks have virtually fallen apart. I was able to speak to someone in Louisiana and they said it was funny that I called. It seems the Aquarium of America in New Orleans had recently decided to try to get the organization back up and running. They are actually meeting today, and since it is a volunteer driven organization, there should be a place for me. I'm sure they mostly see dolphins and manatees, but from what I understand we do have Sperm, Fin and Sei whales. I also spoke to the Institute of Marine Mammals Studies in Mississippi. Am trying to hook them up with the Louisiana board so maybe they can rekindle together. Anyway, I'm excited! How about on a national level? Are there organizations that could use volunteers, even though they may not live in the area? The only thing I have to offer is love and time, but I figure that's a good start. Tell Steph hi and give Fluke a big hug and kiss on the head. I know yall must be getting excited about your new "Princess".
Take care, Becky
"It was your generous spirits.."
01/01/2001: My family and I had such a glorious time today on your whale watching cruise. It wasn't just the beautiful day and the unbelievable sightings, it was your generous spirits and the passion that comes through in everything you do.
I will begin working on getting my 5th grade class on a cruise right away.
In the meantime, our family has been glowing all day and sharing this beautiful experience with everyone we know.
From my 81 year old mother to her great-grandson, Theo, the 2 1/2 year old with the great purple boots, THANK YOU.

"...an experience that will never be forgotten"
We recently joined you for a whale watching cruise on November 24, 2000 and would like to thank you again for an experience that will never be forgotten. I don't think the words exist to the feelings we all had inside when we saw those two amazing creatures in their habitat (but I know that I don't have to tell you two that). Again, thank you for an incredible day.....
