If you appreciate what we've created with Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay, you are going to love what we now have on the Trinity River. Steph and I created an adventure inn with 6 cabins (5 right on the Trinity River) for people who want to try new things, but at a relaxed pace. As one fellow recently put it, "I don't want to be beaten up like the kids do!"

Your adventure could be kayaking the gentle Trinity River on Ocean Kayak sit-on-tops, or rafting in our 14' eight person raft. Or climbing beside waterfalls, or leisurely strolling by the river. Or fishing some of the best spots on the river, many along our own shoreline, or within easy walking distance. What about hiking the spectacular mountains right out our back door? We can also hook you up with skilled local guides for a drift boat fishing trip. There must be a championship for hanging out in a hammock one could practice for. Whatever your adventure consists of, you'll dine on excellent food and plenty of it, as Steph says.

How different is Trinity County? Besides the beauty and slow-paced, natural charm, we are proud to report it doesn't have one stoplight anywhere. Name another California county that can make this claim.

Our cabins are located 45 minutes west of Redding in northern California, just off Highway 299. We're a 6 1/2 hour drive from Monterey, 4 1/2 hour drive from San Francisco and 2 1/2 to 3 hours from the Sacramento area.

The Trinity is home to a fantastic array of fish, including salmon, steelhead, German Brown trout and rainbow trout. Fishers pay guides to take them down the river so they can fish the water our guests can cast into a minute after hopping out of bed and grabbing a cup of coffee. The river in front of our place has a unique quality, making it a perfect place for kayak instruction. That's because although the river flows one way, there is an eddy on our side that flows the reverse direction. So as we gently introduce folks to paddling skills, they can perfect them by working up and down and across the flow. Think of it as a teaching ground that offers everything needed to build your knowledge and confidence to run the river.

"Steph is an excellent instructor, explaining things clearly and concisely. I especially enjoyed learning [about ferry angles]. Thanks sooo much for the opportunity to hone old skills and to pick up some new ones." Judy Maben

We have a fleet of brand-new Ocean kayak sit-on-tops, great paddles, comfortable life jackets and other water wear if you're up for cold-weather paddling. Best of all, we have Steph, renowned for his solo expedition by sea kayak from Canada to Mexico, BC to BC/'93. His knowledge of paddling and skill in instruction is unparalleled.

"Steph is such a patient teacher. I love your little boats and that they handle so well.Boating down the river with you both, and Bisco too, chatting, seeing the fish, looking at all the birds was so cool. What a beautiful trip and learning experience. I can't wait to do it again."

Our location on the Trinity River allows us to launch from our place and go for miles, or we can launch upriver and kayak home. This is exciting water, but not the big, scare-yourself-silly whitewater found elsewhere. Paddlers will get a mix of calm drifting and easily navigated rapids, or they can opt for smooth lake adventures complete with lunch, or night paddles with wine and stargazing.
